Now We Know Who’s Getting The U.S. Air Force’s Factory-Fresh F-15EXs

The U.S. Air Force has announced the squadrons that will be first to receive new F-15EX Eagle fighters. A pair of Air National Guard squadrons in Oregon—one a training unit, the other a front-line air-superiority squadron—will convert to the new super-Eagle by 2023.

The announcement reveals the Air Force’s strategy for replacing its weary F-15Cs, which are more than 35 years old on average and increasingly expensive to maintain. Some of the Air National Guard units flying F-15Cs will convert to the F-15EX. Others will replace their vintage Eagles with new F-35 stealth fighters.

Left unsaid in the Air Force’s announcement is the service’s plan for replacing F-15Cs in the active-duty force, including at the service’s Pacific super-base in Okinawa.
