Ted Cruz: Trump tweets have 'coarsened discussion'

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Monday said he believed many of President Trump’s tweets have “coarsened discussion,” but praised the president for having “a backbone."

“So many of us are so sick and tired of Republicans that roll over and whimper when encountering the slightest resistance. And I think probably the best characteristic about the president is he’s got a backbone. And he will fight,” Cruz told conservative talk radio host Hugh Hewitt, when asked how the president has changed the Republican Party.

“Now I will say ... I wish his tone and some of the things he said were different,” Cruz added. “Many of the tweets I’m not a fan of, and I do think it has coarsened discussion. So that is a less-than-positive development.”

Cruz, who ran for the White House in 2016, has rarely addressed the content of Trump’s tweets since the president took office, but he called Trump a “sniveling coward” during the 2016 Republican primary after tweets from then-candidate Trump attacking Cruz’s wife Heidi.

The Texas senator went on to say the president has “driven the Democratic Party insane [and] also driven the media insane.”

“And in terms of how that impacts the Republican Party, that actually has some of us defending things like free enterprise, defending things like the founding principles,” he added. “It is pushing Republicans, and I hope we go much faster towards this, to actually defending the fundamental ideals upon which our nation was founded.”..........

He's not wrong, really. Our already-debased culture could use some uplift, not more nastiness.

But when you look at what Democrats routinely get away with in terms of personal insult, denigration, false accusation, and general hysteria, what Donald Trump chooses to "tweet" is not even in the same league.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

Correct. He may have "coarsened the discussion" in terms of how republicans previously responded, but he didn't invent the coarseness.
The left had already fully established their willingness to go there, early, and often, before Trump ever came onto the scene.

Trump's 'course discussion' has the effect of setting a fire to a corn field & flushing out the rodents. It would be nice if it weren't necessary but the vermin were there anyway.

This is where I have always had a problem with cruz.... not a fighter.

The rino's are just mad because Trump is making them fight for their jobs.

I disagree --- most importantly has always been a defender of the Constitution  ...  “It is pushing Republicans, and I hope we go much faster towards this, to actually defending the fundamental ideals upon which our nation was founded.”..........

IF the fundamentals upon which our nation was founded is allowed to be destroyed; we will lose everything.

I've seen him go after Feinstien on 1A issues, and Obama's previous CBP department head, over the amount of violent criminals let in.
"Green Eggs and Ham", anyone? Filibustered the Debt ceiling, but that didn't get anywhere, unfortunately.
Got on McConnell about the Ex-Im bank being included in the Pacific trade deal, after it was agreed it wouldn't be in there, so He's had a few moments.

Needs more of 'em, but he's had a few.

Speaking of McConnell -- Cruz publicly called him a liar and rightfully so.  I've posted this video before; but those who claim he's not a fighter -- I beg to differ:

Yep, these are coarse times, for sure. Haven’t seen anything like it since the sixties. Only thing is circumstances have changed. Democrats are out of the closet and talk now of how to implement socialism in America makes for polite dinner conversation in toney enclaves of New York City, Los Angeles, Minneapolis and Seattle.

Trump has a way of being Trump. He’s a survivor, he’s managed to navigate some treacherous obstacles to get this far. If he thinks tweeting is workIng for him he’s gonna go on tweeting. Seems to me he’s just rolling with the times.

But being a devout conservative, Cruz has voted for every one of these budget busing corona virus bills you keep slamming Trump over.  Why are you not slamming Cruz?

I most certainly HAVE, declaring on the record my dissatisfaction in that regard, right here on this board... To the point that I have declared a great difficulty in being able to pull the lever for him in any future sense. And I mean it. His actions in the last few years have been a gigantic disappointment.

You see, I AM an even-handed and equal-opportunity offender.

But that does not disregard his past.

Well, I would submit that is proof Cruz is not a fighter.

I can't say much to defend that, since he kissed the great orange ass that defamed his wife. But as I said, that does not omit his past.

That's one way to look at it I suppose, or he defended Trump later on when he felt that he was right....  he also called Trump a sniveling coward and told him to leave Heidi the hell alone.... that's in the past.  IMHO he still stands for the fundamental principles upon which this country was built.

Spot on.  There are about 10-15% of them that I really don't think should have be made.  But the rest ?  Ohhhh yeah.
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

That is in fact the quintessential difference I am looking for -- I don't want a politician. I want a statesman. That is in fact the direct opposite of a populist... The sort of guy that stands on the truth no matter what. What attracted me to Cruz was that exactly - Not that his record is unquestionably Conservative, which it is - But rather that that sort of record shows a sort of mettle that portrays a statesman.

In the past three years Cruz has gone from an ACU rating in the high 90s to an ACU rating in the low 80s, and that kind of movement - The first in his entire LIFE - That is what worries me about him. He can fix it with me yet. And I would still be more likely to vote for him than for Tumpy (I am on the balance right now, you'd have to talk me into voting for Cruz now). But it would take some doing to restore that trust.

Definitely not expecting you to give anyone a free pass.   I would also like him to weigh in with some remedies on some of the current issues -- he is speaking as a Senator not as the President.  He did speak out against China & legislation -- and China placed sanctions against him and Rubio.

Perhaps. But he has shown a weakness. A vacillation that I have never seen in him before. And there ain't no denying it. Where he stands does not matter if he can be moved. He has demonstrated that he can in fact be moved. That is a problem. That is THE problem.

Any comments on this shiny object??
