Fox Sports to add virtual crowds to MLB ballparks

Fox Sports announced Thursday it will include computer-generated fans in otherwise empty stadiums for its telecasts this season, starting on Saturday.

“We believe that what we’re doing is creating a natural viewing experience,” said Fox Sports Vice President Brad Zager. “Sports is supposed to be an escape and when people have that escape we want it to feel as normal as possible when there’s very little normalcy, like a crowd at a baseball game on a Saturday."

"We’re not looking to fool everyone. We know it is a virtual crowd. But we also know how jarring watching a game in an empty stadium is on TV," Zager added.

I have to admit, when watching a couple of exhibition games, the canned crowd noise reminded me too much of those sorry years when canned laughter was put into television comedies. (And as often as not burst out when the joke wasn't really that funny.)

I don't think it's creepy so much as I think it's perversely amusing---especially if you think there's liable to be more than one time when the people responsible for hitting the buttons to crank up the crowd noise hit the buttons at the wrong moments. (Try to imagine the poor sap who inadvertently hits the button when the home team's batter gets hit by a pitch.)

I wondered about that and still am curious is the crowd noise only edited in for viewers or is it played through the ballpark speakers too?

I think it'll go through the ballpark PAs, too. Numerous players have spoken about how weird it would be to play ball without crowd noise.

I'll bet the network won't allow that to be shown.  The only way we'll know is after the fact, in still pictures from stories about it.

I would say the American Left/Global Left has won a huge victory.
If you want to destroy America, tear down all the institutions.
Police, Sports, Pubs, Restaurants, and all the rest.
I doubt BLM or the Athletes or even that Kaepernick guy meant to crash American Sports.
They are just pawns and fools being used by people much bigger than them.
But yes, it's gone. I can't even imagine what American Sports will look like this year, or in five years?
Today, it is nothing like it once was as a means of national bonding/national unity.
No more peanuts. No more cracker jacks. They have performed a kind of 'group suicide'.
By embracing all these far-Left radical causes, they are alienating most of the country.
And the extreme irony is...the far Left doesn't watch sports.
What was innocent and 'fun', is now perverted, political, and dirty.
At least all of us old-timers still have memories. Memories our children will never experience.
It is the end of an era.
