Senator Hawley claims Circuit Attorney Gardner is targeting McCloskey family, calls for civil rights investigation

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Senator Josh Hawley is calling for a federal civil rights investigation into St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner.

Thursday morning Hawley sent a letter to Attorney General William Barr about the “targeting of the McCloskey family for using firearms to defend themselves and their property against a mob of protesters.”

Hawley claims Gardner has abused her power in seizing the couple’s guns and pursuing a possible indictment.

As of Thursday morning, the McCloskeys have not been charged with anything for the June 28 incident that drew national attention.

On Tuesday, Gov. Mike Parson said he had spoken with President Donald Trump about the McCloskey case.

"I just got off the phone with the President of the United States before I walked out here today," Parson said. "He understands the situation in Missouri. He understands the situation in St. Louis and how out of control it is for a prosecutor to let violent criminals off and not do their job and try to attack law-abiding citizens. The conversation I had with the President, said that he would do everything he could within his powers to help with this situation."

Following Parson's remarks, Gardner released a statement claiming Gov. Parson and President Trump came after her for doing her job. She also said she was reviewing the "available facts and the law and will apply them equally regardless of the people involved."

St. Louis is the worst large city in the US for murders per capita. And Gardner is wasting police and DA office resources to harass people who acted within the law to protect themselves. WTH!

The governor of Missouri is (in typical Republican fashion) acting like a skeered dog.

He has the absolute power to remove the "investigation" from Gardner's control and bump it upwards (where presumably the attitudes might be less biased against the McCloskeys).

Why won't he do this?

Sen. Josh Hawley has asked the Justice Department to investigate Kim Gardner, the St. Louis prosecutor. Gardner is persecuting the McCloskeys, the St. Louis couple who brandished guns when a mob invaded their property and two of its members, both white, threatened them. According to reports, she issued warrants, confiscated their guns, and is considering whether to bring criminal charges against them.

I’m not persuaded that the low level of persecution to date warrants federal intervention. If Gardner decides to prosecute the McCloskeys for exercising their civil rights, that might be a different matter.

Meanwhile, Gardner is playing the race card to the hilt. She told the Washington Post, “this is a dog whistle of racist rhetoric and cronyism.” As far as I can tell from the Post’s article, Gardner did not identify any “rhetoric” from Hawley that has anything to do with race or could plausibly viewed as such. Nor did she identify any cronies.

This is basically targeting Mark and Patricia McCloskey for a riot attack by publicly
removing their defensive weapons.

I imagine the McCloskeys, dims, will cast their ballot for Trump.
