Baltimore protesters rip down Columbus statue and toss it in harbor
by Madison Dibble, Breaking News Reporter |
 | July 05, 2020 09:53 AM

A statue of Christopher Columbus now sits at the bottom of Baltimore's Inner Harbor after a group of people toppled the statue on Independence Day.

Protesters used chains to rock the statue back and forth until it toppled on Saturday. They then rolled it from its post near Little Italy to the water's edge and tipped it into the Inner Harbor.

Lester Davis, a spokesman for Democratic Mayor Jack Young, told the Baltimore Sun that the protesters' decision to topple the likeness of Columbus is part of a “re-examination taking place nationally and globally around some of these monuments and statues that may represent different things to different people."

“We understand the dynamics that are playing out in Baltimore are part of a national narrative. We understand the frustrations,” Davis said. “What the city wants to do is serve as a national model, particularly with how we’ve done with protesting. We’ve seen people who have taken to the streets, we have supported them. We are going to continue to support it. That’s a full stop.”

Baltimore was a city of monuments. No wonder it is a target.

Quote
Protesters had hung flyers throughout the city about plans to tear down all statues that honor "white supremacists, owners of enslaved people, perpetrators of genocide, and colonizers." The toppling of Columbus's statue was part of large protests against police brutality and racial injustice that have taken place nationwide following the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who died after an officer knelt on his neck for several minutes during an arrest in Minneapolis.

At some point this provocation will be too much. I only hope those who respond can take the people that allow this nonsense to task.

Are they going to tear down the one of Jackson and Lee that Pelosi's father dedicated when he was Mayor of Baltimore, and will she applaud it?

WATCH: Ronald Reagan Dedicates Christopher Columbus Statue in Baltimore

The statue of Christopher Columbus that Black Lives Matter protesters tore down and threw into Baltimore’s Inner Harbor on July 4th was dedicated by President Ronald Reagan in October 1984 as a monument to the Italian-American community.

Any chance that voters will hold city officials accountable for letting wholesale vandalism go unanswered? More likely they’re more accountable to the vandals than to the taxpayers. Never mind.

Dear police: part of your job is protecting property.
Every time I read or hear about these incidents, my first thought is: WHERE ARE THE POLICE?
Obviously, the police were told to stand down by the mayor.
I would love to see these people charged with some crime. I'm talking about the mayors as well as the scum toppling the statues.

Where is the Mayor?

Just a note, Mayor. Your city is on its way to becoming the sh*thole at the top of the Chesapeake.

I went there in the late 70s and enjoyed the diversity in ethnic foods, the abundant monuments, visited the book shop where my uncle worked, the Constellation , the restoration of which I supported a a youngster, and had a great time.

What have you done?

After burning out a section of town, now you are tearing down the monuments? The streets I once walked at night with my girlfriend are no longer safe. Doubtless the places we ate are long gone.

How have you and your predecessors since 1980 served your City?
Where is that great renaissance you had all promised in the '70s?
Instead, you want to tear it down and remake it in the image of Detroit. What are you going to do to attract the sort of investment needed to rebuild the City, rich in history, or are you going to just destroy it, in some twisted effort to hide the past?

The present offers little to attract people to anything but the fastest way around the City of Baltimore, and more's the pity. As a young man I fitted steel that came from Sparrows Point, on its way to power plants being built in West Virginia to provide electricity to the East Coast.

You have one of the world's wonderful natural harbors, and instead you tear down the past to fill it in with statues.

You should hang your heads in shame for what you have done.

Judging from the comments from the mayor's spokesperson, it seems the mayor approves.  Apparently, this is so in other cities where statues have been vandalized or torn down altogether.  And if the top dogs approve, the police can do nothing.

I would say, impeach the mayor and take down anyone else in local government who let these terrorists run wild.  But it seems to me the majority of the citizens also approve, or they would not have voted these bums into office in the first place.

You know, I find it kind of strange that these pukes would piss off the Italian population.  There's got to be a Tony Soprano or 2 out there to work a little magic.

I wonder how many voted for who? McKeldin was the last Republican Mayor in Baltimore, (term ended in 1967), so it has been a long string of the same. But the Democrats of the 50s and 60s for the most part were still Americans, and not off on some seriously socialist bent. Brandon Scott beat Sheila Dixon in the Democrat primary, narrowly, and may be the next Mayor there. It was an upset, and he had roughly as many white as black voters, so hopefully he'll do a better job.

The thing is, they want to flaunt the law but what are they going to do when the rest of us have had enough and decide to dispense the law ourselves? It will be a bit more expedient. I really doubt this can continue for many more weeks like this.

It is truly looking like we're not going to make it to another election. The focus should be from the GOP and the DEM to control the mobs.  Ultimately, the mayor isn't doing his job, nor the governor, so it IS up to Trump.  Sure he gave some good speeches for the 4th -- he needs to deliver.  He said that things were going to change very rapidly.

Well....rapidly...would mean take action now!
Romans 12:16-21

Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all…do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

I have to wonder how many of these officers are willing to risk arrest and imprisonment after what happened in Atlanta. Hoiw anxious would you or I be to arrest "a person of color", given the political climate in these Demoncrat strongholds?

@verga

I'm old school. You take the man's money, you agree to do what he tells you to do as long as it is legal.

If you are not willing to to do that, quit and let someone else take the job.

Providing of course the city can find anyone to take the job. If they can't,the city will end up burning, which would have happened anyhow because once you inform the public that blacks will no longer be held responsible for anything they say or do "causen hit bees de honkies falts!", the city IS going to burn, and the people who set it on fire are going to be demanding new brick homes for free. The mayor and city council will either agree with that,or they and their families will be murdered for being "racists hold-in de black mans doawn!"

It will all work out in the end because eventually the Governor will activate the National Guard, and order them in with "shoot to kill" orders if anyone resists violently.

And most of those who do get killed will owe it all on their Black Masters, most of whom don't even live there or give a damn about them being killed. They were only in it for the "grant money" they were going to get to calm the crowd down once the fighting started. If it got out of hand,it wasn't THEIR fault, right?

Howsumever,if there is ANY justice at all in this world, they will be tracked down and set on fire whenever and wherever they are at that instant. If fire is inconvenient for reason of danger to innocents, there is nothing wrong with a chair, and a short rope and short drop because they NEED to suffer before they die, just like their (mostly innocent) followers suffered.
Anyone who isn't paranoid in 2021 just isn't thinking clearly!
