GOP senators debate replacing Columbus Day with Juneteenth as a federal holiday

Republican senators are debating whether Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, should replace Columbus Day on the federal government’s list of official holidays.

A bipartisan bill sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) to make Juneteenth a federal holiday is being held up by an internal Senate GOP squabble.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), an outspoken budget hawk, doesn’t want to add another paid holiday to the calendar.


Johnson says if Juneteenth is made a federal holiday, another paid federal holiday should come off the schedule. He’s proposing scrapping Columbus Day but is open to eliminating another holiday instead.

“I’m just saying let’s replace it with something. I chose Columbus Day just because it’s probably the most lightly celebrated and less disruptive to anybody’s schedule” to cut from the calendar of federal holidays, he said.

If they want Juneteenth let them have it.  Combine it with MLK Day.  They have been getting that day off but they never embraced the dream of all people created equal and judged by their Character not the color of their skin.  Instead they embraced the march with their feet Democrats that pushed racism all these years.  There was never a chance in hell that they could escape slavery when they voted for the Jesse Jacksons, Bill Clinton and John Kerry's of the Democratic party.

So Juneteenth can be a combined MLK holiday.

May I suggest swapping out the holiday celebrated the third Monday in January?  How many Black Supremacy holidays should we have?

I have said it on another thread, but if the government want to create another holiday, fine, eliminate one.  The very last thing we want for this country is to end up like Puerto Rico, with 24 holidays.  No one wants to invest capital there, and that is one major reason.

Take a look at Russia.  Not sure how many holidays they have, but it is a bunch, starting with ten days off with the beginning of the new year.

The USA must remain competitive on the world stage.

From my recollections of when I was working with a Chinese Research team, they have a similar number of Holidays as we do, in groups.  The week or so of Spring Festival ("Chinese New Year") and the first week of October for National Day.  They would shift the workweek to celebrate other Holidays like Tomb Sweeping Day.

Those two week-long holidays are a real pain, because everybody has the same days off.  There was an 18-hour traffic jam incoming to Beijing a few years back, following a Spring Festival.

Well, it seems to me that these paid holidays apply only to government employees and contractors because the private sector still works and/or has "red tag sales".
So lets just get rid of all paid holidays and let people take vacation for those days if they want them.

Excellent idea.  And if you did a national poll of workers in the United States whether they would prefer 10 extra flexible vacation days versus 10 holiday days, I'd venture the first option would be prefered overwhelming.  Finish this dumb holiday farce once and for all.
