A group of Jewish camp owners are suing Gov. Andrew Cuomo after the state announced it was banning sleepaway camps this summer amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Association of Jewish Camp Operators is asking a judge to block the closures because it claims the ban violates their constitutional right to freedom of religion and parents’ right to choose the “religious education and upbringing of their children,” according to the suit filed in an upstate New York federal court Thursday.

The camp owners say they aren’t criticizing the state’s stance on protests but rather they are requesting “the same treatment for Jewish overnight camps, which the First Amendment protects as vigorously as it protects the mass protests.”

The camps have health and safety protocols ready to go that would make the the facilities, “considerably safer than the exempted mass protests as they relate to the transmission of COVID-19,” the court filings claim.

I hated sleep away camp. Just my two cents. My sister on the other hand loved it.

Sleep away camp seems to me like high school. You either love it or hate it. I think sleep away camps sole purpose is to give parents a respite from their kids.

Introverts do not do well at summer camp. My second year I just told my parents I would go take my bike to the library every day, which I did. And brought my lunch as well. I was much happier.

    Deputy State Attorney General Fires Back on Request for Camp Restraining Order

    .In response to the restraining order requested by the Association of Jewish Camp Owners against Governor Cuomo’s decision to ban camp this summer, New York State Deputy Attorney General Chris Liberati-Conant request a one week extension before the hearing.

    Claiming that camps were “on notice for months that overnight summer camps might not open” and that the camps who are suing had “10 days to tailor their complaint to the specific facts of the case,” the state lawyer requested that the state be given a week to formulate their own evidence.
