Some USAF "leaders" were wanting to kill the Warthog back in the late 70s (back when I was a junior tech testing, troubleshooting, and aligning A-10 PUs [HUDs]). The A-10 occupies a niche between aircraft like F-16s and F-35s and helos like the AH-1 and AH-64, fulfilling much needed missions for which the other craft are not well suited. The USAF should know to do this, but they should not be allowed to retire the A-10 until a well-suited replacement is in production.
