Several reporters misrepresented a quote from President Trump regarding police using chokeholds by leaving out a large part of the actual quote.
“The concept of chokeholds sounds so innocent and so perfect, and then you realize, if it's a one-on-one, now if it's two-on-one, that's a bit of a different story, depending,†Trump said during an interview with Fox News’s Harris Faulkner that aired Friday. “Depending on the toughness and strength. You know, we're talking about toughness and strength. There's a physical thing here also. But if a police officer is in a bad scuffle, and if he's got somebody in a chokehold,†he continued before being interrupted by Faulkner, who said, “Then it's a one-on-one fight for their life.â€
“Yeah,†Trump agreed. “And that does happen. So you have to be careful. With that being said, it would be, I think, a very good thing that generally speaking it should be ended.â€
Some news outlets and reporters spread news of that quote, leaving out the part where Trump says chokeholds should be ended, which then made it appear that he was endorsing chokeholds and downplaying the death of George Floyd.
“Trump on Fox: ‘I think the concept of chokehold sounds so innocent, so perfect,†MSNBC producer Kyle Griffin tweeted.
