Biden comes out against defunding police, as movement gains traction

Joe Biden's campaign came out Monday against the growing push to "defund the police," saying instead that the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee supports the “urgent need for reform.”

“As his criminal justice proposal made clear months ago, Vice President Biden does not believe that police should be defunded,” Biden campaign Rapid Response Director Andrew Bates said in a statement Monday. “He hears and shares the deep grief and frustration of those calling out for change, and is driven to ensure that justice is done and that we put a stop to this terrible pain.”

Bates added that Biden supports “the urgent need for reform,” which he said includes “funding for public schools, summer programs, and mental health and substance abuse treatment separate from funding for policing — so that officers can focus on the job of policing.”.........

I Believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.

@Slide Rule

Yup,no way in HELL the Dims want to lose control of the police when they come back in power.

After all,you can't have a proper police state without proper policing.

Damn I was hoping Biden would continue pandering to the loonies right up to November.

I do notice he waited long enough to see how the public would react to the idiocy.

Q: "If they disband the police, what will they replace it with?

A: Community Self Defense. Community Self Defense is the general term used by ANTIFA and other autonomism-based groups use for essentially establishing what might be called in traditional COIN parlance, "Shadow government." They would object to this term of course. This does ABSOLUTELY mean the use of armed violence against their perceived opponents, as this article on Community Self Defense by the IWW (Wobblies) makes clear. But it means providing all manner of "government" services as well.

This Chicago Abolitionist (of police, prisons and capitalism) makes the following point. Abolishing the police must logically necessitate the arming of their own cadres. You might say, "this is loony-tunes, Spanish Civil War LARPing nonsense."

No sorry, this is revolutionary politics. In a revolutionary environment (Russia 1919, Spain 1930s), at least in the short term, this stuff works. It's messy, but it works.

In long run, of course, some manner of order reasserts itself, Napoleon-style, usually by whatever "comrade" is nominated to run the self defense committee. plus ça change...

Of course you might reply that Minneapolis (or Portland, or Seattle or whatever) is NOT Barcelona circa 1936. And you would be right. But it provides a way to test concepts and capabilities, to de-legitimize the State (see we can provide resources the same as you can!)

Ask the Taliban how well this works. Or FARC, or the Mexican Cartels. It works. The obvious objection is that this is America and we aren't in a moment of revolutionary politics. Such things do not happen in America.

But how confident are you really in that answer?
