Portland police chief resigns, promoting black officer: It's the 'right moment'
By Rebecca Klar - 06/08/20 05:35 PM EDT

The police chief of Portland, Ore., resigned Monday, promoting a black lieutenant to serve as her replacement amid protests in the city in the wake of George Floyd’s death.

“He’s the exact right person at the exact right moment,” outgoing chief Jami Resch said at a news conference of Lt. Charlie Lovell, according to ABC News.

Resch has been with the department for more than 20 years, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB).

“To say this was unexpected would be an understatement,” Lovell said, OPB reported.

“I think one of the most important things we can do as an organization is to convey to the community our heart,” he added. “We love you, we fall down sometimes.”

Resch had been police chief for all of six months, per the NY Post.
Gee, must have been more work than she expected.

By Maxine Bernstein | The Oregonian/OregonLive

The day before Jami Resch told Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler that she wanted to step aside and have an African American lieutenant replace her as police chief, she received a caustic letter from black leaders who took her to task for her all-white command staff.

The letter from three African American groups -- Black Male Achievement, Word is Bond and the Coalition of Black Men -- blasted the city’s commitment to diversity in the Police Bureau’s leadership. ... Portland Oregonian

Portland mayor gives city workers 40 hours off to grieve death of George Floyd, others
by KATU Staff
Monday, June 8th 2020

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) – Mayor Ted Wheeler announced he would be giving City of Portland employees 40 hours of bereavement leave to grieve following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and others across the nation.

According to the mayor’s office, the bereavement is to give employees time to reflect as Americans face “a collective grief and trauma coming from a culmination of oppression that is over 400 years old.”

“We hear and understand that many of our employees, especially our BiPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People Of Color) employees, are deeply impacted by these recent events and are hurting,” Wheeler said in a press release. ...

I somehow doubt I'd appreciate being called a BiPOC. Why didn't they capitalize the "I"? Anti-indigenous white privilege?
