It took 73 years for this veteran to get his Medal of Honor. A new documentary tells his story

Garlin “Murl” Conner earned his Medal of Honor in 1945, but it wasn’t until 2018 that President Donald Trump awarded it to his widow.

The Kentucky native got his due after family and friends campaigned for 22 years to prove he deserved the country's highest military honor. They lobbied, wrote letters to people in power and even sued the government.

His widow, Pauline Conner, said she never thought her late husband would get the honor he deserved for running, while still recovering from an earlier wound, toward German troops, unrolling telephone wire as he went, so he could direct friendly fire on his own position and thus attack the enemy during World War II.

“After it went on for so long, I just (gave) up on it,” Pauline told The Courier Journal.
