His father, Marcus Arbery, said Ahmaud was fit and athletic. He said Ahmaud lived with his mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, who has a listed address in Brunswick, Ga.
A 911 call obtained by USA TODAY details the moments before Arbery was shot dead when a caller indicated a "black guy" in a "white t-shirt" was in Satilla Shores on a property under construction.
"And you said someone's breaking into it right now?" the 911 operator asked.
"No, it's all open, it's under construction. And he's running right now, there he goes right now," the caller said.
The 911 operator later says she is sending police to the scene but “I just need to know what he was doing wrong.â€
“He’s been caught on the camera a bunch before . . . It’s kind of an ongoing thing out here,†the caller says.
The caller said during the call that there had been break-ins in the neighborhood.
Gregory McMichael told police he believed Arbery was the person seen on a surveillance video breaking into homes, according to a Glynn County police report. Gregory and Travis McMichael then grabbed their guns, got in their truck and chased Arbery through the neighborhood, the report say.......
The Glynn County Police Department said Thursday that it had no reports involving burglaries or home break-ins in the Satilla Shores neighborhood between Jan. 1 and Feb. 23. However, local media reported that one burglary, an automobile burglary, was reported to police in the Satilla Shores neighborhood during that time.
Glynn County Commissioner Allen Booker said the killing of Arbery has rocked the local community and many residents were frustrated with law enforcement's failure to make an immediate arrest. “I’m pretty sure most of the people out there are pretty shocked by it," Booker said of the murder. Booker, who is black, said he knew there was racism in Glynn County but never expected it would escalate to a killing. Booker said he has been working with local clergy in recent years to improve the black community's relationship with the police. "The black community has always had issues with law enforcement here," Booker said. (I don't believe anything Booker says=L.A.)
Gregory McMichael is a former Glynn County police officer.
Glynn County is 69 percent white and 27 percent black. Satilla Shores borders Brunswick, Ga.— a town of about 16,000 that is 56 percent black and 37 percent white.
In Brunswick, 37 percent of the residents live in poverty.
Cason said in an interview Friday that while his commission has no jurisdiction over Satilla Shores, the two communities have close ties.Cason, who is white, insisted that racism and racial profiling were not common in the southern Georgia communities. Cason said he is “heartbroken†by the killing of Arbery. “Emphatically it was the wrong thing to do," he said.
