State Board of Elections Cancels New York Presidential PrimaryNY 1, Apr 27, 2020
New York’s June 23 presidential primary has been canceled, the state’s Democratic Board of Elections commissioners announced Monday.
Bernie Sanders has been removed from the ballot and Joe Biden has “effectively" won the New York primary, the board said.
Sanders suspended his campaign for president on April 8 and soon after threw his support to Biden.
“That has effectively ended the real contest for the presidential nomination,†State Board of Elections co-chair Douglas Kellner said in a virtual meeting. “What the Sanders supporters want is essentially a beauty contest.â€
Sanders has made clear he wanted to stay on the ballots for upcoming state primaries in an effort to influence Biden and the Democratic Party platform at the national nominating convention.
Sanders' campaign reaffirmed his desire to remain on the New York ballot in a letter Sunday night to the Board of Elections.
Several congressional and legislative primaries still are set for June 23.
