Speaker Nancy Pelosi said President Trump's decision to ban travel between the United States and China at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic did not go far enough.

Trump has routinely touted his decision to implement a travel ban between the U.S. and China as his best and earliest move to fight the coronavirus pandemic. During a Sunday interview on CNN, host Jake Tapper asked Pelosi if she agreed with Trump's decisions related to the ban.

"Tens of thousands of people were still allowed in from China. So it wasn’t, as it is described, this great moment. There were Americans coming back or green card holders coming back. But there were tens of thousands," the California Democrat replied.

She continued, "So if you’re going to shut the door because you have an evaluation of an epidemic, then shut the door."

Restrictions also apply to US citizens who have been in China's Hubei province, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, in the two weeks prior to their return to the United States. Upon their return, those citizens will be subject to a mandatory quarantine of up to 14 days, he said.

US citizens returning from the rest of mainland China in the 14 days prior will undergo health screenings at selected ports of entry and face up to 14 days of self-monitored quarantine.

Pelosi lied-by-omission. Unsurprisingly.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) repeatedly criticized President Donald Trump’s decision to halt flights to and from China. In fact, she led her Democratic colleagues in calling the president a xenophobe and a racist for making such a decision.

“One point of clarification I was wondering. Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign told me earlier this month that he supported President Trump’s partial travel restrictions on January 31st, blocking foreign nationals from China coming to the United States,” CNN’s Jake Tapper said on Sunday. “Do you agree that it was the right move by President Trump at the time?”

Pelosi Now Says U.S. Should Have Stopped Americans Coming Back From China

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested Sunday that the Trump administration’s January China travel ban implemented to curb the spread of the novel Wuhan coronavirus should have barred U.S. citizens from returning home.

“Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign told me earlier this month that he supported President Trump’s partial travel restrictions on January 31st blocking foreign nationals from China from coming to the United States. Do you agree that it was the right move by President Trump at the time?” asked Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Pelosi dodged the question and instead lodged criticism that the ban still allowed for thousands of U.S. citizens to come back to American shores from a plagued China.

Am I reading this correctly .... Pelosi would have abandoned American citizens to die in China?

I said this way before Nancy did.  It is totally within the presidents authority to ban travel.  There is no reason why he could not have issued a level 3 advisory to citizens and green card holders for a short amount of time to get them home.  But after that he had every right under his authority to issue a level four advisory and stop travel.  Leaving it open for citizens all that time was irresponsible and they do have data for how many traveled.  Citizens are the biggest portion of travel to China and probably Europe also.  As they go home to visit.  But in an emergency how hard would it have been to say you have a limited time to come home, and you will be screened and quarantined?  After an adequate time to get citizens home.  Coordinated flights by the government if need they could have shut it down and saved lives.

Level one: Exercise normal precautions
Level two: Exercise increased caution
Level three: Reconsider travel
Level four: Do not travel

  And that was nearly 4 weeks after Trump' travel shutdown was announced, so she should have known its terms.

As Cuomo put it, they shut the front door while keeping the back door wide open. New York's alleged "patient zero" (who really wasn't the first patient) came in from Iran, which I thought we had sanctioned but whatever.

While we were shutting down mass gatherings in mid-March, we were also bringing mass numbers of Americans back to their hometowns in crowded jet airliners and buses, bringing the disease along with them. In hindsight, it was a horrible move.
