USNS Comfort to return to Virginia after Trump, Cuomo agree it's no longer needed in NY

A Naval hospital shift that was dispatched to New York City to assist with a surge in coronavirus patients will return to Virginia soon so it can be routed elsewhere, President Trump said Tuesday.

Trump met with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) at the White House on Tuesday afternoon, where the two discussed testing and funding for states. Trump said he also asked Cuomo about reallocating the USNS Comfort to another area of need.

"I’ve asked Andrew if we could bring the Comfort back to its base in Virginia so that we could have it for other locations and he said we would be able to do that," Trump said at a press briefing.


The president said converting the Javits Center convention space to a makeshift hospital has made the ship less necessary.

IMO, the Navy should consider whether billing NYC and LA for the unnecessary deployment of the Comfort and Mercy to those cities would be appropriate.

I respectfully disagree.

1. At the time of sending the ships, it was NOT known the extent of the anticipater humanitarian  medical emergency.

2. NY & LA consist of multiple jurisdictions, of cities, counties, etc.

(same as SF Bay area)

It is not entirely over, and we will be debating this for years to come.

Do hard hit hurricana localities, get bills from FEMA, Corps of Engineers?

Look at it this way:
Even though things turned out that it wasn't absolutely needed, it was (as I remember the saying back in my Army days) "good training".

That ship probably hadn't been in that state of readiness for years previously...
