DART spokesman Gordon Shattles said the suspect was dead, but he did not have details on that person’s age or gender or how the person died.

Garland police spokesman Lt. Pedro Barineau said gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and officers, but he couldn’t confirm which agency the officers belonged to.

Hernandez said that while the bus was in Rowlett, the suspect leaned out the window and fired at officers chasing the bus.

A DART officer was wounded in the leg, and a Rowlett officer was also hurt, officials said. Their injuries were not expected to be life threatening.

Another Rowlett officer had the window of her police car shot out, but she was not injured, Hernandez said.

No injuries of passengers on the bus were reported, Shattles said.

There was also one other passenger on the bus, officials told WFAA. Authorities said they did not know if or how they were connected to the incident.

The incident began sometime before 11 a.m. when the suspect got on the bus in Richardson on Buckingham Road and fired a riftle, shattering several windows, officials said.

The suspect then ordered the bus driver to drive them somewhere, though authorities did not know where. Police began to chase the bus through multiple jurisdictions and an active shootout between officers and the suspect occurred as the bus continued down PGBT, Barineau said.

Authorities used spikes to slow down the bus near Rockwall and Rowlett, according to officials. It came to a stop between State Highway 66 and Liberty Grove on the northbound side of the turnpike.

The suspect then exchanged gunfire with police as he got out of the bus, officials said. Both the passenger and bus driver were not physically harmed.

There were only 3 people on the bus. They could have maintained social distancing.
