NYC Public Schools Will Not Reopen This Year; NJ Braces For Peak to Hit in Coming Days

To date, more than 235,000 have been infected and more than 10,000 people have died in NY, NJ and CT; still, there are signs the curve is flattening

Governors Andrew Cuomo, Phil Murphy and Ned Lamont, as well as NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, all preached similar refrains by the end of the week, as some evidence was starting to show that weeks of social distancing and isolation were beginning to flatten the curve as they had hoped.

Mayor de Blasio hopes keeping public schools closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic year will help. De Blasio made the announcement at his Saturday morning briefing, saying "it clearly will help us save lives."

New York City public schools won't reopen until September

New York City public schools will be closed through the remainder of the school year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The mayor closed schools in the middle of March, and local officials were hoping schools could reopen in mid-to-late April, but that will not happen, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced during a Saturday press conference.

"It's not an easy decision. It's not a decision that is satisfying for all of us who have devoted so much time to make sure our kids got the very vest education, but it is the right decision," he explained.

He also added that opening the schools would be unrealistic, given the amount of preparation needed to do it safely, while noting that bringing students back in June does not make much sense from an academic standpoint.

And the Governor says that's "jsut a suggestion".

This is shaping up for an interesting battle.  The Progressive Governor v. The Socialist Mayor.
