Louisiana police use siren from The Purge to signal coronavirus curfew

Authorities in Louisiana played a siren from horror film The Purge to alert locals to a newly established curfew for the coronavirus.

Crowley Police played the alarming sound last week to alert residents to a curfew, which lasts from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. "If you are out between the 9:00 pm to 6:00 am you will be stopped and advised to go home," police said in a Facebook post, according to KATC news.

Police chief Jimmy Broussard told local media his intent was not to make residents fearful. "As we examined it, we did not want to go through with our regular sirens because we did not want to create more havoc," Broussard said. "One of the officers, who is military, approached me and said, 'You know, chief, there is an old military siren that was used in the movie Purge, but it's been used for many, many years,'" he continued, saying his goal was to create less havoc.

Many locals reportedly submitted complaints to the police department and vented their frustration on social media.

The Purge is a horror film that depicts a dystopian United States where, once a year, all crime is legal, including murder. As the siren blares in the film, characters are made aware that all emergency services are unavailable and that crime can begin.
