That is not true.

That is not true either...

Both statements are true.

Are you implying @Bigun that Cyber couldn't get 50% + 1 in a card check scheme and put the squeeze on Myst?

The United States Announces Assistance To Combat the Novel Coronavirus
https://www.state.gov/the-united-states-announces-assistance-to-combat-the-novel-coronavirus/

Press Statement
Michael R. Pompeo, Secretary of State
February 7, 2020

Quote
This week the State Department has facilitated the transportation of nearly 17.8 tons of donated medical supplies to the Chinese people, including masks, gowns, gauze, respirators, and other vital materials.  These donations are a testament to the generosity of the American people.

Today, the United States government is announcing it is prepared to spend up to $100 million in existing funds to assist China and other impacted countries, both directly and through multilateral organizations, to contain and combat the novel coronavirus.  This commitment – along with the hundreds of millions generously donated by the American private sector – demonstrates strong U.S. leadership in response to the outbreak.

This assistance only adds to what the United States has done to strengthen health security programs around the world.  For the last 20 years, the United States through USAID has invested over one billion dollars to strengthen the capacity of more than 25 countries to prevent, detect, and respond to existing and emerging infectious disease threats.  Since 2015, under our commitment to the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA), this support has helped improve surveillance and laboratory systems, risk communication, outbreak response, and address the rising threat of anti-microbial resistance.

The United States is and will remain the world’s most generous donor. We encourage the rest of the world to match our commitment.  Working together, we can have a profound impact to contain this growing threat.

Anyone know what we got for this?

1952 polio epidemic (the one that crippled one of my good friends)...... "Of the 57,628 cases reported that year 3,145 died and 21,269 were left with mild to disabling paralysis."

In the entire epidemic in a year, 57, 628 cases.

To date: 53, 520 cases in New York alone............. in a few weeks.

Not the same thing.

We have never seen anything like this in our lifetimes.

NONE of us.

1952 was not the first year that polio appeared on the scene, meaning that there was already some immunity in the general population.  However, your figures do point out casualties of over 24,000 in that year alone.  A 1916 epidemic in New York City alone killed 2,000 and left untold thousands paralyzed.  The response was massive quarantines, the closure of public establishments, and the prohibition of gatherings.  Names and addresses of those infected were published in news outlets, initializing the ostracizing its victims.  By casual observation, you couldn't tell who had it since many cases went undetected and did not result in paralysis.

In the 40's and 50's, polio would kill or paralyze on average HALF A MILLION PEOPLE across the world EVERY YEAR.

So yes, America has faced something like this before, something that has had a longer lived and far more devastating effect than the current epidemic.

Those are final numbers........ and without the appropriate medical response, so the numbers are greater than they would have been with proper isolation.

This virus is nowhere near the peak, so comparative figures are not yet valid.

But I have no doubt that a few of you will continue posting them to underplay the severity of this virus.

My point........... which you missed.......was that this is unprecedented in our lifetimes.  In OUR lifetimes.

I chose 1952 because many of us were alive then, the polio scare was tremendous, and yet the numbers in a couple of weeks with this virus far surpass those numbers.

The numbers of cases and deaths in the Asian flu in 1957 were large (nothing was done to isolate then.... our whole family was very sick and bedridden during that), but all the numbers from that are final numbers.

This hasn't yet peaked, and isn't going away for a long time (a year before a vaccine?), so the numbers in the end are the only valid comparative numbers with anything in the past.

I will repeat what the medical community is saying, over and over again........this is unprecedented in our lifetimes.

Unless you're like Greg Palkot's Dad who is 107?? happy77

New York cholera epidemic in 1832 caused 40% of the population of New York City to flee to the countryside.  For those that remained, 2% of them would die from cholera. Today, that number would come to over 32,000 in Manhattan alone.

Just for my own information, according to Wikipedia, FDR supposedly contacted polio in 1921. So I guess it was around for quite some time last century.

Death rate is far from the only concern here, we don't want hospitals so busy that people who need medical care for other reasons, a broken legs,  tonsils, have to go through a big crowd to get attention.

U.S. military command teams in charge of protecting homeland security are being isolated in the infamous Cheyenne mountain bunker where they will remain 'sealed off' until the coronavirus pandemic passes

Military teams that monitor foreign missile and warplane threats to the United States are isolated at a number of military sites, including Cheyenne Mountain

The Cold War-era bunker is located in Colorado Springs, Colorado

The command took such steps to ensure personnel can monitor the COVID-19 pandemic around the clock as the disease spreads around the world

The military are not immune from the disease and such is the nervousness, those working at the bunker have prepared to seal themselves off for months

FYI, might be something, I've heard this before, my own research backs it up.

Information from Vienna’s laboratory studying COVID-19 say vast majority of people who died had ibuprofen/Advil in their system so do not take it!! Those who recovered did not take ibuprofen so if you have symptoms, take Paracetamol only!!! Looks like this virus thrives on ibuprofen so don’t do it and tell everyone you can!!!

Please pass this information on to everyone in each family I don’t want to miss anyone so share as much as you can. Or copy and paste!

I just spoke with my friend who is a nurse at VGH (Vancouver) and they just learnt that Advil makes the virus 10x worse. Tylenol ONLY for the time being. She said Advil kickstarts the virus into pneumonia.

She also said they are not releasing the correct number of cases on the news and they have patients coming in everyday and some currently on ventilators. Soon they won’t have enough room in the hospitals to treat patients and will have to turn people away. They’ve cancelled all surgeries to use the ORs for available ventilators, but it still won’t be enough.

She also said she found some people in their 40s and 50s who were previously healthy to be on ventilators and having major difficulty breathing because they took Advil.

Also 4 doctors at VGH are now infected and she said she has never seen her doctors so worried before. So please no Advil and stay safe!!!

New York cholera epidemic in 1832 caused 40% of the population of New York City to flee to the countryside.  For those that remained, 2% of them would die from cholera. Today, that number would come to over 32,000 in Manhattan alone.

Wow.  Some of us are very, VERY old, if the cholera epidemic was in our lifetime.   wink777

Unprecedented in OUR lifetime.

Death rate is far from the only concern here, we don't want hospitals so busy that people who need medical care for other reasons, a broken legs,  tonsils, have to go through a big crowd to get attention.

Hospitals in certain locations are already overwhelmed.

Some other buildings are being refitted in order to take care of non-contagious patients to alleviate the enormous stress on existing hospitals.  In some areas one hospital is being designated a COVID hospital while others have patients with other medical needs.

So you are right.......... the death rate, whatever it will END UP being, is not the only concern.  Focusing on it and saying this ain't so bad blurs the reality that this is indeed very, very bad.

All of us have the ability to "see" into the past.  It's called 'history'.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

All of us have the ability to "see" into the past.  It's called 'history'.

And that has no bearing on the statement made about what is happening in OUR lifetime.  That is the reference I made.

And I know history well.  It's just that the medical experts are USING that information to keep us safer today.

And THEY are the people I choose to listen to.

We all know that there have been plagues and diseases in the past that killed many.  Our healthcare experts are working hard to make sure that the damage from this plague is minimized.

Stay safe, Hoodat.  Don't be afraid.
