Fracking technology, and seed money to develop electric cars.  Plus loosened restrictions on clean coal.  A plausible argument could be made on threats of oil tariffs but I'm not factually equipped to make that argument.
No way electric cars would be economical without a combination of government kickbacks and high fuel prices.

You still have to get the electricity from somewhere, and without tilting the playing field with moving target regulations against traditional sources, the "alternative energy" sources would have never been funded, either, because the ROI would have been too small.

High prices led us to become more energy efficient, because the expenditure for the technology could be justified in terms of the cost to be less efficient.
When energy is cheap, the cost of developing technology to be more efficient is prohibitive.

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

The scientist that first identified the "coronavirus"

June_Almeida

" Dalziel Almeida (5 October 1930 – 1 December 2007) was a Scottish virologist a pioneer in virus imaging, identification and diagnosis.[1] Her skills in electron microscopy earned her an international reputation.[2] In 1964, Almeida was recruited by St Thomas's Hospital Medical School in London. By 1967, she had earned her Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) on the basis of her research and the resulting publications, while working in Canada, at Toronto's Ontario Cancer Institute and then in London at St Thomas.[2] In 1967, she continued her research at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School (RPGMS),[2] which is now part of the Imperial College School of Medicine. She succeeded in identifying viruses that were previously unknown, including—in 1966—a previously unidentified group of viruses that was then named coronavirus.[Publications 1][3]:96 Her electron micrographs continue to be included in virology review textbooks, decades after she produced them"

As long as the price of electricity is tied to the price of oil/gas, electricity will never be able to compete with either.  Liberals of course have made this happen by insisting electricity be generated from natural gas.

Well, That Unraveled Quickly

Thinking back to February 28, 2020, and the New England Journal of Medicine. It published an article called “Covid-19 — Navigating the Uncharted” signed by Anthony S. Fauci (THE Fauci), Clifford Lane, and Robert R. Redfield.

It reported an existing COVID-19 case fatality rate of 2% but further pointed out that infections show “a wide spectrum of disease severity.” “If one assumes that the number of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic cases is several times as high as the number of reported cases, the case fatality rate may be considerably less than 1%” or perhaps as high as the flu seasons of 1957 and 1968, but is nowhere near “a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively.” To be sure, they said, mitigating the disease could require “isolating ill persons (including voluntary isolation at home), school closures, and telecommuting where possible.”

Now, what precisely happened between February 28 and two weeks later? This will be studied for many years to find out precisely how governors and mayors, through a series of unscientific, panicked, unjustified, and morally egregious actions, crushed under foot the world’s strongest economy while the media cheered. We’ll be discussing the whys and whats for a generation.

The point is that it is all unraveling as fast as it came. Donald Trump’s press conference on April 16, 2020, was clearly a turning point. In my ideal world, we would have officials up there telling the truth that the course we took as a nation was catastrophic in countless ways (except for all the panicked deregulation undertaken just so that the food and medicine could continue). But I’m realistic: we can hardly expect politicians to bow down and beg forgiveness.

Of course they will take credit for whatever good happens. I’m an idealist, not a utopian. The truth is that a virus doesn’t care about borders and it doesn’t obey government edicts. Even now, there is so much we do not know about this “invisible enemy” but we have learned vast amounts about the visible enemy...

In the meantime, we’ve seen things we never imagined possible, namely seemingly intelligent people howling for weeks for the nationalization of industry, the socialization of production, the imprisonment in our homes, the trillions in pointless spending, the unprecedented amounts of new money created by the Fed, and the countless other awful legal precedents set. The lawsuits will continue to be litigated for a decade.
The core realization we face right now is that it is not possible to stop and start an economy; nor is it possible to distinguish between essential and nonessential. The commercial society is a web in which everyone and everything is connected with everyone and everything else.

It’s increasingly clear the focus on widespread testing (as opposed to widespread ANTIBODY testing) is a sideshow designed to delay reopening and take the focus away from the empty hospitals. It’s another version of wait two weeks.

Why not. By the time widespread testing is available and we find out the true mortality rate of this thing, people will no longer be seeing the Venetian Plague Doctor under the stairs. And will be looking for someone to blame for the reality of their economic condition.

That'll give the media plenty of time to build their narrative.

I think a scoreboard and factoid post is in order-----

(1) This is serious deadly virus.  There is no way to candycoat it.  We as a society are not used to calamities like this.   However......
(2) The 1918-1919 Flu Pandemic killed 10% of the world
(3) The COVID-19 curve has been flattened world wide since April 1, which maybe at worst case half of fatalities are enumerated.  If you double the fatalies registered, Mortality (Death) percentage of the world will be .0035%..  Meaning the true lethality of the 1918 Flu was nearly 2900X this one.
(4) IN 1918, society had enough common sense to know that the collateral damage of shutdown of society would be worse than the disease itself.
(5) ONLY the most naive do not recognize that this pandemic has had a huge element of political manipulation.  The level of desperation and dispicable has never been equalled in our history.  There should be nationwide condemnation of the info cartel (Big Tech, MSM, Dimocrats, NWO lackeys) They have exploited peoples livelyhoods and wealth for political gain.  Beyond disgusting.
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

Even though you are probably correct.....

We were seeing on the news European countries closing down.  Italy hauling bodies down the street in military vehicles to be buried.  Not to mention the devastation in China, them welding doors shut on apartment buildings, the crematoriums running full speed.  All of this was happening and our people were seeing this as it was happening.  There was plenty of fear being spread. Every country shut down....not just ours.

It may turn out that we did the wrong thing, then other countries did as well.  This virus is DEADLY to our seniors and those with compromised health.

Exactly.  And not that it looks like the goal posts for when things are going back to normal are on roller skates...the Liberals and the egg heads advising Trump could stretch this out to infinity two weeks at a time.

Now there is talk this is seasonal like...dare I say it...the flu.

Are we seriously going to shut everything in this country down and live like prisoners in our own homes and live in fear of personal and business bankruptcy every January through June?

Enough is enough people.  It's time commons sense made a comeback and we get back to leading our lives and stop living in a manufactured fear waiting for a thumbs up or thumbs down from our overlords.

We'll never really know - unless someone undertakes to quantify the human costs of the shutdown. For example I recently heard Bill Bennett cite a statistic (he didn't provide a source) that for every percentage point drop in employment the annual suicide rate increases by 10k.

Dunno if this is true but undoubtedly there is a correlation.

You bring up great points.  Seperating humanity from cold sad morbid facts is really hard to do.  I was even more of hardened statistican of this event, until one of my son's teachers (younger than I am) caught the disease and died.  He was a very dedicated wonderful educator, who loved his job and the children he taught.  A terrible loss to our community.

But at some point of time, you have to look at the well being of our society as a whole versus the sadness of individual losses.  I know that may seem heartless, but just remember how our European ancestors dealt with Black Death almost 700 years ago.  This is nothing like 1918, and not even in the most remote way like 1350 when half of our population was wiped out.

Simply, we as a society need to make sure that the cure is not more deadly than the disease itself.

When the State tells you it's safe to go to Home Depot to buy a sponge but dangerous to go and buy a flower, it's not about your health.

When the State shuts down millions of private businesses but doesn’t lay off a single government employee, it's not about your health.

When the State bans dentists because its unsafe, but deems abortion visit is safe, it's not about your health.

When the State prevents you from buying cucumber seeds because it's dangerous, but allows in person lottery ticket sales, it's not about your health.

When the State tells you it's dangerous to go golf alone, fish alone or be in a motor boat alone, but the Governor can get his stage make up done, and hair done for 5 TV appearances a week, it's not about your health.

When the state puts you IN a jail cell you for walking in a park with your child because it’s too dangerous but lets criminals OUT of jail cells for their health- It’s not about YOUR health!

When the state tells you it’s too dangerous to get treated by a doctor of chiropractic or physical therapy treatments yet deems a liquor store essential- It’s not about your health!

When the State lets you go to the grocery store or hardware store but is demanding mail-in voting, ITS NOT ABOUT YOUR HEALTH.

WAKE UP PEOPLE — If you think this is all about your health you’re mistaken! Please open your eyes! Stop being lead like blind sheep.

I will never be convinced the Chinese didn't "accidentally release this virus on purpose" parts I put in bold above were not the reasons it was released. They have millions of old and weak citizens they have to provide food, clothing, and shelter for,and the Chinese are NOT know for having a strong streak of humanity or kindness.

Just look at all the money they will save over the next few years from not having to feed, clothe, house, and provide medial care for all those people who were unable to work in their factories and produce junk to sell to the west.
