Watching "Don't Look Up" right now, and it's not particularly "wow" so far.

@sneakypete

Won’t I need Comcast for internet if I buy a Roku stick?

Sigh, hardware confuses me sometimes

@Gefn

No. The ROKU gets it's wi-fi signal from your phone line. If you have a phone line,you are all set to use a ROKU.

Cancel Comcast.

Do NOT take my word for this. Contact ROKU direct and ask them any questions you might have. After all,THEY are the experts and they understand this a lot better than I do.

I just know how to work it,not how it works.

I do know that mine picks up it's signal from my telephone line.

BTW,do NOT buy a ROKU stick. Spend the astounding 68 bucks it costs to buy a full-ROKU.

After all,look at all the money you will be saving by not paying Comquest each month.

Yes, that's the catch.  You still need internet (though not necessarily cable internet).

@Hoodat

No,what you need is a Wi-Fi signal. That is NOT "the internet".

No,what you need is a Wi-Fi signal. That is NOT "the internet".

Actually, you need:

1. High speed internet
2. Wi Fi set up in your home (Usually 1 and 2 come as a package)
3. a ROKU , firestick, or some other such streaming device.
4. Subscription(s) to get the programming you want if it's not included with your streaming device.

I ran for the longest time in my house with Wi-Fi only for our phones. For my PC, Roku, TV and movie server, it was all CAT6 Ethernet. With fiber for the internet. The Roku box I have now only operates Wi-Fi.

If done correctly the whole 'story' such as it is, could be a 30 minute skit.

I have yet to meet a person who regretted cutting the cord. How Cable even still exists is a mystery to me.

Or directly from ROKU.COM or from Amazon,and save the hassle of driving,parking,and dealing with crowds.

Full retail for the ROKU I use is 68 bucks. There is a nicer one with better sound and other options including wireless headphones for right at 100 bucks,if you want to go upscale. The Bose (IIRC) wireless headphones alone are probably worth more than the extra money you will pay.

I have a woman friend who has had a ROKU for a couple of years,and STILL pays Comcast 200 bucks a month to view less on cable.

She has ever sat right here in my house and seen how much more the ROKU delivers for less than 10 bucks a month,and refuses to get rid of Comcast because "it's easier to use". Which shows you she never even tried.

Oh,well,her money,not mine

BTW,MAY have to pay your phone company a few more bucks each month for the Wi-Fi.
I guess this depends on where you live and your phone company. I know I pay extra,but it is such a small amount I keep forgetting I pay it.

Probably best to check with your phone company about Wi-Fi availability and costs first.
It is POSSIBLE they MAY have a contract with your condo association that would keep you from getting it.

Ask first and be safe.

Yes. Love the show. This season has been a little difficult to follow in spots, but I love the concept.

Just started Season 2, so a ways to go.

My house was built in 1960 and my phone lines must be just as old. I had to use dial-up for years as I pulled the plug on cable many years ago. They finally offered me DSL and I switched over one winter. When spring came and the phone wires warmed up(copper resistance goes up with temperature), my internet went to crap and I had to go back to dialup. Finally they ran fiber and I switched over.

The phone or cable company provides you with an interface from the Internet to a Modem. From the Modem, the internet connection, as well as your own network connections, can be routed via Wi-Fi or Ethernet or both.  Wi-Fi is "Wireless Network Protocols". Ethernet is "Wired Network Protocols".

You're describing 'me', @sneakypete   ROKU my ass!

Why in the world do I need this 'stick'...that 'stick' when it ain't the damned LIVE forecasts such as my local news stations from 4AM to 9AM?

Yes...(lowering my gaze)  happy77 , I still pay VERIZON FIOS $220. monthly for something called GIG SPEED internet (it STILL buffers, the dirty  SOBs), and every channel from 2 to the music channels at 1400+.

And, uh... I don't watch any of them.  Why do I need to watch Denzel and Meryl' MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE another dozen times?

Can you get the 'LIVE' NFL playoff games on ROKU?  NO.  You can't.

@DCPatriot

No,I can't,but I consider that to be a bonus. If I want to watch other people having fun,I'll watch porn.

As for broadcast tv,I have a 45 dollar RCA antenna that weighs maybe 4 lbs,and pulls in 43 FREE broadcast tv channels. I used to only get 5,depending on the weather with my old HUGE antenna. Which means I am now getting 40 channels I had never even heard of before,and some of them are broadcasting the ORIGINAL "Twilight Zone" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" in glorious black and white. This stuff is STILL as good as it was when I was watching it back in the 50's as a kid. NOBODY beats Rod Sterling when it comes to presenting a spooky story,and Alfred Hitchcock STILL cracks me up when he marches out on the stage and says "Good Evening!"

I ALSO get all the local news stations. This box that converts the alalog signal to a digital signal so I can watch it cost me 139 bucks from Amazon,and there are NO monthly fees. One time payment. Even comes with a nice remote and the ability to record programs.

AND......,I can switch back to my ROKU by simply pushing a button my remote.

Even with all the Premium channels I subscribe to,I only pay right at 90 bucks per month for everything.

I'm still learning the ROKU but heading your way fast! Direct TV soon to be HISTORY (Need to get ROKUs for other TVs first) and if I never see another pro sports event, I'll be happy!  BTW, I can watch my local news broadcasts free on ROKU via News On App.

@Bigun

Never even heard of that,much less tried it.

Then again,I have the analog convertor box,and can pull in all the local news channels with that,so I don't need it.

I can get all the big broadcast national news channels on my ROKU,but have no interest in watching them. I lose all interest after watching the local news and weather.
