Social distancing isn't going to last for long. We'll also need a Plan B

Nobody can expect average people in the United States, let alone anyone under the age of 35, to lock themselves inside their homes for months on end. It’s not going to happen. It's not reasonable.

The Trump administration is advising that the coronavirus spread may last through the summer. A vaccine could be 18 months away. It's delusional to think that young people are going to spend even two months holed up watching Netflix. People need social interaction. People need to work. Tolerance for being told by the government to remain at home indefinitely, eating soup and playing board games, is limited.

Right now, the only option we have is to ask that, yes, everyone remain indoors and limit social interaction. But soon, we're going to need a plan B. We will have to enter a period in which people practice a heightened level of hygiene but go about their daily lives while avoiding large gatherings — something closer to normal but where everyone continues discouraging physical contact, such as hugs, handshakes, and sharing food and drinks.

I give this thing about one month from now at the most for people hiding in their domiciles. Nobody self-quarantined because of  the H1N1 virus. At least I didn't read anything in the news about people doing that.
In a few weeks we'll have more data on how infected people are reacting.
If they're not dying or being hospitalized at high levels (and I don't think that will happen), I think most of the hysteria will die down (no pun intended).

Even though there are springbreakers around, I do think the numbers are down quite a bit

I saw a picture yesterday of them in Florida, I don't know if I even saw a female in the picture and what's more, fox showed a FL beach this morning largely empty.

If one is dense enough to go to Mexico for SB, they'll probably go a lot of places but I think the numbers have definitely declined.

Until the pipeline is drained, my work isn't affected.

Can go days without coming into contact with anyone.   Taking bank-ordered exterior photos of homes and/or businesses that are applying for equity-lines.  Travel Washington, Co. to Baltimore Co., Maryland...Pennsylvania State Line to Northern Virginia.

They're a lot less stressful than orders accepted for delinquencies in payment(s)   

And now that foreclosures are being detained, I would imagine a spike in those orders.  Hopefully, the occupants won't get confrontational when they see an old guy outside taking photos.     :laugh:

The other strategy available is to say f*** it, we can’t stamp this out, it’s going to be with us perpetually, let’s let it run its course, try to isolate the highest risk citizens, and rely upon what is known as herd immunity for protection. Herd immunity is defined by the CDC as “a situation in which a sufficient proportion of a population is immune to an infectious disease (through vaccination and/or prior illness) to make its spread from person to person unlikely.” That is what childhood vaccinations try to accomplish. If you can vaccinate 80% of the population, then the ability of a disease to spread approaches zero. That’s because most of the population can’t carry the disease and that protects the part of the population that cannot or will not vaccinate.

This seems to me to be much more logical and potentially less devastating to our economy. 

With shutting down businesses, people are out of work, entire industries are now financially impacted and I think we are going to see a dire financial crisis because of these bailouts.  The gov't can't afford to sustain social security -- so who's going to pay for all of this ... some of these bailouts are excessive, ridiculous and could have been avoided.

  @DCPatriot I pretty much shut down last Friday, it wasn't much anyway, just aggravation & pocket change.

Stopped at Costco today to get a combo pizza (which they are not selling) and a few other items.  Merchandise has been thinned out and aisle widths increased to help increase inter-shopper distances.  At the checkout line, there was a sign asking shoppers to stay 6' apart which is easy if you have a shopping cart.   But this woman slipped in line behind me without a cart and violated my 6' cone of protection.  I whirled around and shouted, "Back off, lady!  Get six feet back!"

If "herd immunity" is being mentioned, there are a lot of people questioning it. Our government is not going in that direction.  And there's another way, if current measures work, impact may be milder for all of us.

An article was posted that Netherlands and UK may be having a second look at the "herd immunity" idea.

Just because some doc says it, doesn't mean it is so but there certainly are critics of the idea.

He is also a champion of autism parents.  Much of what he says adds value.  But his comments here regarding 'herd immunity' deal with vaccines and are totally unrelated to the current virus.

Too much, actually.  I've always been a bit of a loner, so stopping going to work was like falling off a log.  Mrs. Liberty and I have always gotten along very well, so I'm not all alone.  They had already laid off everybody I worked with in that R&D lab by the time the hook came for me so I had lots of practice.
