Unlike its immediate neighbors Denmark, Finland and Norway Sweden has not closed its borders or its schools.

Why would they?  They're relying on the strategy of strangers.

Cuomo says NYC is our future.  I counter with the example of Sweden as our future:  the practice of safety, VOLUNTARILY undertaken,  without resort to economy-busting lockdowns of dubious efficacy that victimize the working class.

China targets thousands who spoke out about the coronavirus epidemic
« Reply #927 on: April 05, 2020, 11:56:53 am »
Radio Free Asia 4/3/2020

The ruling Chinese Communist Party has targeted thousands of people for speaking out about the coronavirus epidemic in the country since it began in late December in the central city of Wuhan, an overseas-based rights group has said.

Since state news agency Xinhua first reported that President Xi Jinping would lead "a people's war" on the epidemic on Jan. 20, police had handled 5,111 cases of "fabricating and deliberately disseminating false and harmful information," according to a Feb. 21 statement from the ministry of public security.

CHRD said it has documented 897 cases between Jan. 1 and March 26 involving Chinese internet users penalized by police for their online speech or info-sharing about the coronavirus epidemic, based on official information in the public domain.

"The punishments handed out by police fall largely into several types: administrative detention, criminal detention, enforced disappearance, fines, warnings/interrogations, forced confessions and 'educational reprimand'," the CHRD report said.

@Elderberry

Kinda reminds you of the old NY crime families, doesn't it?  "Enforced Disappearance" used to be one of their specialties.

How to understand – and report – figures for ‘Covid deaths’
29 March 2020, 10:07am

Every day, now, we are seeing figures for ‘Covid deaths’. These numbers are often expressed on graphs showing an exponential rise. But care must be taken when reading (and reporting) these figures. Given the extraordinary response to the emergence of this virus, it’s vital to have a clear-eyed view of its progress and what the figures mean. The world of disease reporting has its own dynamics, ones that are worth understanding. How accurate, or comparable, are these figures comparing Covid-19 deaths in various countries?

We often see a ratio expressed: deaths, as a proportion of cases. The figure is taken as a sign of how lethal Covid-19 is, but the ratios vary wildly. In the US, 1.8 per cent (2,191 deaths in 124,686 confirmed cases), Italy 10.8 per cent, Spain 8.2 per cent, Germany 0.8 per cent, France 6.1 per cent, UK 6.0 per cent. A fifteen-fold difference in death rate for the same disease seems odd amongst such similar countries: all developed, all with good healthcare systems. All tackling the same disease. ...

 2. Why Covid-19 deaths are a substantial over-estimate

Next, what about the deaths? Many UK health spokespersons have been careful to repeatedly say that the numbers quoted in the UK indicate death with the virus, not death due to the virus – this matters. When giving evidence in parliament a few days ago, Prof. Neil Ferguson of Imperial College London said that he now expects fewer than 20,000 Covid-19 deaths in the UK but, importantly, two-thirds of these people would have died anyway.  ...

What about Sweden?

I have started to track Sweden’s numbers of Wuhan coronavirus reported cases and reported deaths. Why Sweden? Because it is taking a different approach to dealing with the virus.

Instead of locking down, Sweden is keeping its restaurants, cafes, and schools open. Sweden’s Prime Minister Stefan Lofven says he’s relying on the good judgment of Swedes to carry their country through the pandemic.

Good judgment or not, Sweden’s approach means a faster spread of the virus than would occur with a lockdown. On a per capita basis, new cases in Sweden have started to outpace new cases in Norway, which has locked down.

Coronavirus: WHO Scrubbed Website Document to Underline Opposition to Travel Bans
By Patrick Goodenough | April 3, 2020 | 4:38am EDT

(CNSNews.com) – When a World Health Organization-convened committee of independent experts met at the end of January to decide whether to declare the coronavirus outbreak in China a global health emergency, it advised that travel restrictions “may be ineffective” but also acknowledged that they could have their place.

“n certain specific circumstances, measures that restrict the movement of people may prove temporarily useful, such as in settings with limited response capacities and capabilities, or where there is high intensity of transmission among vulnerable populations,” the emergency committee said in a statement on January 30.

@TomSea

At this point it is hard to say because it has morphed from being  a disease,to being a political talking point.

Which means in some instances in some areas,if someone is wearing a mask while being murdered during an armed robbery,or ran over by a bus while wearing a mask and stumbling home drunk,it is now considered to be a virus-related death.

For example,I just learned from Slow Joe reading a rehearsed plot make the claim that African-Americans and other minorities are suffering more than crackas. Evidently this virus is not only deadly, but it is also racist and supports Republicans.

Tired of worrying about the pandemic? There's always Pyongyang
By Christopher R. Hill, opinion contributor — 04/04/20

Malcolm Toon, the iconic American diplomat who served in Moscow in the 1950s and ’60s, and then as ambassador in the late 1970s, famously said of working with America’s Cold War rivals: “If you’re pissing off the Soviets, you must be doing something right.”

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo must be doing something right with the North Koreans, who seem perennially upset with him. Despite President Trump’s professed love affair with Kim Jong Un, the North Koreans have come after Pompeo on numerous occasions, calling him a “gangster” even during the honeymoon period following the Trump-Kim Singapore meeting, and this week declaring that Pompeo’s “reckless remarks” have caused them to “drop their interest in dialogue with conviction.” Pompeo’s “reckless” remarks? He suggested at the recent G-7 foreign ministers’ online meeting that “all nations must remain united in calling for North Korea to return to negotiations.”

It is not at all clear what Secretary Pompeo has done to so “piss off” the North Koreans. Could he have had the temerity to insist on some actual progress in the talks? Perhaps a timeline for when North Korean might consider coming into compliance with its public statement made during the Singapore meeting with President Trump that it would abandon its weapons? Shutting down its production of fissile material? Of course, none of these steps has been taken.

The author here is Chris Hill, former ambassador during Bush years, he sure is critical when people say, well, to be frank, the Bush years weren't helpful in dealing with North Korea. Hill apparently is a prof of diplomacy at the University of Denver and a fellow for the Carnegie Endowment of World Peace, see bio at end of article. Still, worth a read. To me, Carnegie think tanks seem to be on the liberal side.

Iran Official Calls China's Coronavirus Numbers A 'Bitter Joke'
    Radio Farda

The spokesman of Iran’s health ministry has said that figures the coronavirus infections and deaths published by China’s government was a “bitter joke”.

Kianush Jahanpur in a video media conference March 5 said, “It seems statistics from China was a bitter joke, because many in the world thought this is just like influenza, with fewer deaths. This [impression] were based on reports from China and now it seems China made a bitter joke with the rest of the world”.

Jahanpur added, “If in China they say an epidemic was controlled in two months, one should really think about it”.

‘Lost The Credibility’: WHO Faces Mounting Backlash For Running Interference For China

The World Health Organization is facing a mounting backlash over its handling of China’s cover-up of the novel coronavirus.

WHO leaders, including Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, have run interference for China’s propaganda war meant to absolve the communist nation of responsibility for the global spread of COVID-19.

The WHO is now under increasing pressure from experts and Republican senators.

Gordon Chang: Did China’s Regime Downplay the CCP Virus to Allow for Its Global Spread?
By Jan Jekielek
April 4, 2020 Updated: April 5, 2020

How did the actions of the Chinese Communist Party directly lead to the global CCP virus, or COVID 19, pandemic?

Has the US reached a “Pearl Harbor” or “Sputnik” moment with respect to the Chinese regime?

Could it be possible that the severity of the COVID 19 reality in China was intentionally downplayed to allow for the global spread of the virus?

China wants more than anything to be a world leader. The Wuhan lab leak is a serious detriment to that and must be buried at all costs. Chinese and other people's lives are minor considerations to that end.

....and IMHO with the help of the Bidens and the DEMS, the Chinese may very well get their wish.

I hope that he recovers, and tells about it.

I would like more info about China, So Korea, Iran, Italy, the UK, the US.

US breakdown of what has worked, in view of widely different results to date. ie. dates and actions in CA & NY for example.

But until the end, not much can be learned with confidence.

I though perhaps when they said it was for testing, it would be a chest x-ray or MRI. Evidently he's still running a fever and coughing so (just my guess) they are concerned about pneumonia. But now it’s being reported he's been admitted, at least for overnight. That's not good.  **nononono*
