The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded Columbia’s FN America a new $119 million contract to manufacture the military’s front-line assault rifles, according to the DoD website.

The Belgium-based company located off Old Clemson Road in northeast Columbia is contracted to manufacture more than 167,000 M4 and M4A1 carbines for the next five years.

FN officials could not be reached for comment.

I am no expert but it would seem to me that $700+ per rifle is a tad over priced....

For a Milspec M4 which has 3 round burst, and a milspec M4A1 which has full auto?  Not at all.  I’m actually quite impressed by that price.    A partial milspec low budget semi auto civilian version like the DPMS Oracle is probably close to $500 right now

I don't think the price is out of line. Given the option, I'd pay that much for one. I'm fairly thrifty, so I see the price of a full auto or three-round burst capable mil spec firearm for a dab over half the price of an M1A as a good deal.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

I wonder if democrats on the Armed Services Committee are worried that those weapons are automatic and can do so much damage to people?
