We spend a ton of time and money talking about over regulation by the government, and rightly so. The challenge is "convincing the convincables" that too much regulation stifles economic growth and is not an overall benefit to the nation. The struggle is that business has a terrible record of meeting their responsibilities, we have spent trillions cleaning up the super-fund sites, we oil companies have no plans to address oil disasters and fight like hell in court refusing to slean up the messes that do occur (new horizon for example). So we are "arming" the unconvinced with ammunition to oppose the self-regulation conversation.
AND then, we have these burn pits, and the base in Afghanistan K2 (see story below) that demonstrates our own government refuses to follow it's own regulations and further, demonstrates that deregulation will only advance the positions the left is advancing.
We have to fix this or we will never win the "Smaller government/deregulation" argument.
However, in an intelligence review from November 2001, obtained by McClatchy, U.S. Central Command found four hazards contributing to contamination of K2: a missile storage facility that had exploded in June 1993, an abandoned fuel storage facility, an abandoned aircraft maintenance facility and runoff from a chemical weapons decontamination site, which appeared on U.S. intelligence imagery in 1987.
