Secession fever spikes in five states as conservatives seek to escape blue rule

By Valerie Richardson - The Washington Times - Wednesday, February 19, 2020

You’ve got Oregonians seeking to cascade into Idaho, Virginians who identify as West Virginians, Illinoians fighting to escape Chicago, Californians dreaming of starting a 51st state, and New Yorkers who think three states are better than one.

Separation fever is sweeping the nation as quixotic but tenacious bands of frustrated rural dwellers, suburbanites and conservatives seek to break free from states with legislatures increasingly controlled by liberal big cities and metropolitan strongholds.

“Oregon is controlled by the northwest portion of the state, Portland to Eugene. That’s urban land, and their decisions are not really representing rural Oregon,” said Mike McCarter, president of Move Oregon’s Border for a Greater Idaho. “They have their agenda and they’re moving forward with it, and they’re not listening to us.”

It would be easier for those folks just to leave these states
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

And leave those who can't behind to be lorded over? Sure, it might be "easier" but in the long run, the problem of state imperialism persists.

Look at what that idea has brought Texas. All the hipsters who've been gravitating to Austin and other hot metro areas very nearly got a clown like Bobby O'Rourke elected two years ago.

"Just move" is not a viable solution.

Seceding isn't a practical option either.  The only option is to either vote with their feet, or staying to fight.  I can't blame folks who decide the fight is too costly for their families.

Totally agree. Right now it looks like I'll be among the last of my kind to turn out the lights in the SF bay area, but I ain't leaving. They'll just have to wait till I go toes up.

Seccesion has a zero chance. No state is going to allow itself to be divided into a smaller state. Period.

Either you move where like minded people are or suffer the consequences of staying. And by staying they'll happily take your earnings year after year until they have consumed you. Better to not feed the beast.

I beg to disagree with other posters here.

I sense that in just 50-60 years, at least a few state "borders" are going to change. I won't be around to witness it, but I think it's coming.

If they DON'T change, then the traditional-minded Americans living in the purple (or outwardly leftist) states will have no possible future in which their voices can be heard.

Think of Illinois and New York state as examples, where downstaters (IL) and upstaters (NY) are subject to the overpowering howl of those leftists who inhabit the major cities of Chicago and New York.

In other words, to NOT secede in such states will be acquiescence to "submit" to the unchallengeable rule of the leftist/communists.

That's the way the country may go.

Providing they don't end Prop  13 property taxation, I'm fine to remain in the OC.

My wife is not in love with lleaving, our modest cottage near the sea, with a climate like Santa Cruz and Monterrey.. One mile to the beach, two miles to Newport Beach, 12 miles to Laguna Beach. Views of the Palos Verdes penninsula, and of snow capped mountains.

That's a period that doesn't belong.

History tells us otherwise of the successful splitting up of states over the decades.

While I see this type of seeking freedom as picking up steam and worthwhile if successful, the elephant in the room remains the continued incessant surrendering of states rights to the federal government.

What good is it to flee to or form another state if the federal government contains the bulk of the authority?

Once the federal government is omnipotent, there is no escape left.

Really? Can you give us an example?

I thought "over the decades" meant more recent than the Civil War.  *****rollingeyes*****

Ok, over the history of the US.

Sorry about confusion.

Texas gave up a lot of its territory in 1850 as well that later became parts of New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Wyoming in order to get the federal government to cover its debt.

It is a tragedy that we have gotten to this point.
The left thinks we have a democracy, mob rule, and they are justified in ignoring the constitution and individual rights.
Until the various legislators and court system, including the SCOTUS, reaffirm that this is a republic and not a democracy, this is only going to get worse.

And Virginia split as a result of the Civil War. Hardly a peaceful split.

Monterrey has to be one of the most beautiful places in the world.
