Trump administration adds six countries to travel ban, including Nigeria, citing security reasons
President Donald Trump’s administration on Friday cited security reasons for banning immigrants from six countries, including Nigeria — a move that could significantly impact Houston’s large African community.
The announcement comes nearly three years to the day after Trump signed his first travel ban, spurring chaos at international airports around the world until it was quickly blocked and eventually ended up at the Supreme Court. The justices in 2018 upheld the third version of what critics called a “Muslim ban,†restricting entry from five Muslim-majority countries —Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen — as well as Venezuela and North Korea.
The U.S. government on Feb. 22 will stop issuing visas that can lead to permanent residency for people from Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar and Nigeria, the officials said.
The government will also stop issuing “diversity visas†to those from Sudan and Tanzania. Those “green card lottery†visas are typically available to countries with low rates of immigration to the United States and have been criticized repeatedly by the president.
