There isn't a Parliamentary Rule anywhere that says a tied vote is a vote in the affirmative.  A Motion made has the burden of the majority, and a tie vote clearly falls short.  There will be no ties requiring breaking today, or tomorrow.

I think the issue here is that the Constitution expressly states that the Chief Justice "shall preside" over the trial in the Senate.  In every court in which I've ever practiced, the presiding judge is the person who makes decisions on which witnesses can be called by either side.  So the question is whether we should assume that the Impeachment clause contained in the Constitution opts-out of that normal rule, or whether the calling of witnesses should indeed by up to the CJ.

I think I've figured out the Dems game plan. Create complete chaos and lawlessness in as many American cities as possible. Criminals on the streets, needles, Antifa, the homeless...they want to make America look as bad as possible between now and November. Intimidation is key.

I hope McConnell has contingency plans on witnesses. One might be to appeal to the defectors to give him the 51st vote in order to spare Roberts the discomfort of having to get involved. Another is to structure any deal to include witnesses that are unacceptable to the dems.

I am sorry to not be able to stay in Washington for the conclusion of the Senate impeachment trial but I need to be home with my wife at this time. We have many decisions to make as a family. I have every faith in my colleagues and hope the Senate will do what is right.
