I briefly looked at the information -- the chart indicated in flattening the curve looks exactly like the chart that the Trump team is using; Dr. Fauci.  So there is no hysteria in that information; that is what they are working towards.  As of today, we are in day 6 of trying to contain this -- we had/have a 15 day window.  Not so sure why anyone would think that trying to contain this virus equals hysteria.  It doesn't. The report here that children aren't symptomatic is now being proven false. There are reports of children preschool age and younger are more at risk.

There is a drastic difference of being concerned and taking preventive measures to contain this virus which is being implemented by Trump and his team, and implementing panic and misinformation which the media has done. 

People are concerned and rightfully so.  The government is taking action to try and prevent another Italy from happening and rightfully so.

Those who are complacent and ignoring what is going on are doing just as much of a disservice to those trying to invoke panic and sensationalize.

Another brief Ohio update (Gov. DeWine's daily briefings are excellent, if anyone wants a calm, rational, but realistic assessment of what's going on here):

There are 247 confirmed cases in Ohio, but Dr. Acton explained that what we have is a 'snapshot of the past' and not an actuality of how many are present.  (There are far more cases than the snapshot indicates).

Ohio has a sister city in Wuhan Province so was early in contagion.  But it has been slow to get the reagents necessary for testing. (Ohio hospitals are working to create their own testing, but there is a shortage of swabs).

So, they are only using the tests for the most severe symptoms.

Dr. Acton said that 80% of those who get the virus will recover at home, and that the treatment is the same regardless of whether or not the test has been given.

She urged being in contact with your healthcare provider, STAYING AT HOME, and making sure that if your symptoms increase you let them know.

If everyone is serious, and smart, we can minimize the severity of this epidemic.

Be serious.  Be smart.  Stay home.  Stay safe.

Does anyone want any green jello cups? When they closed the schools early on Monday, sorta two days short of spring break we got a delivery of some green jello lunch cups. Been trying to eat them. My wife. My kids.Everyody's kids, the dogs... Nevermind. It was between 80-100, I think we are down to a dozen.

This is indeed a corona virus, but it is not SARS, it is new.

It is a slightly mutated variant of the SARS virus.

There are many strains of coronaviruses just as there are many strains of influenza.

Some coronaviruses have been known to be circulating in humans since first identified as a distinct family of viruses in the 1960’s. Some of these coronaviruses are responsible for common colds along with rhinoviruses and other viruses – causing uncomfortable but not serious illness in most cases. There is even a coronavirus that only infects cats, IIRC.

Coronaviruses are also very prevalent in bats just as influenza viruses are prevalent in birds and in pigs or in pigs as an intermediary host before jumping to humans. It is when a disease first makes this zoonotic jump into humans and there is human to human transmission that makes it “novel”, meaning new and for which there is typically no prior human exposure or immunity. (With the H1N1 “Spanish” flu one of the reasons thought why it didn’t seem to impact older people was likely a similar strain of H1N1 influenza circulated in the 1870’s – that’s not to say however, that all older people were immune or that older people didn’t die).

When SARS first broke out in 2003 it was immediately apparent that while a coronavirus, this wasn’t a common cold or analogous to a flu as it had a near 10% fatality rate, but thankfully wasn’t highly contagious and was quickly contained. Scientific research showed that SARS (2003) originated in bats, jumped to civet cats and then to humans.

Similarly, MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) with its 35% mortality rate is believed to have jumped from bats to camels and then to humans.

SARS stands for Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome but that doesn’t mean SARS-CoV-2 (or COVID-19) is a “mutation” of the 2003 SARS.  COVID-19 is believed to have originated in bats and jumped to pangolins before jumping to humans although that has not been definitely determined.

SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) simply means it is the 2nd coronavirus transmittable human to human that causes severe respiratory issues in humans, not that it is a mutation of SARS-CoV-1.

The food banks here are overflowing with really good stuff the Casino Resorts all had in inventory when they got shut down by the Governor of Nevada last week.  There is more than green jello in there.

My kids brought jello cups home from college, too. I had no idea the kids enjoyed them so much and they've grown on me, as well.

If you're referring to yesterday, you might want to rewatch the presser.  If it is who I think you are talking about, my take is that he was obviously attacking Trump and team and trying to discredit efforts and mentioned panic to those watching.  Trump shut him down -- a question was asked of Pompeo and Pompeo told him he wasn't going to answer. 

I've watched all the press conferences this week and every day some of the supposed journalists in my opinion are doing more harm than they are good.  They aren't asking questions to report they are asking questions to try and discredit the efforts going on, some questions are accusatory as if Trump and team are lying.
