They haven't known significant shortages of common items for any length of time before. Large parts of the rest of the world have.

Wasn't the last TP shortage in America caused by Johnny Carson?

You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.
Rational fear and anger at vicious murderous Islamic terrorists is the same as irrational antisemitism, according to the Leftists.

4,380      43,072        47,452            1,969    79       49,423

On March 2nd Dr. Stephen Hahn, the F.D.A.’s commissioner, said https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/03/health/coronavirus-tests-fda.html]"The estimates we’re getting from industry right now, by the end of this week, close to a million tests will be able to be performed.” https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/03/health/coronavirus-tests-fda.html

2 weeks later we have less than 50K tests run.  I've read South Korea does 10K test daily.  I have a hunch not everyone who wants a test can get a test.

@roamer_1

Your recipe brings the percentage of alcohol below what the CDC calls for to effectively kill viruses.

https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/show-me-the-science-hand-sanitizer.html

Quote
Many studies have found that sanitizers with an alcohol concentration between 60–95% are more effective at killing germs than those with a lower alcohol concentration or non-alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Hand sanitizers without 60-95% alcohol 1) may not work equally well for many types of germs; and 2) merely reduce the growth of germs rather than kill them outright.

But why is the number of tests important?
If your sick, rest, drink lotsa fluids and keep the fever down, isolate..

If your having real issues, call 911.... Why do I need a test?

@EdinVA Thanks for you reply.
If you're infected the purpose of the test would be to treat the virus before your symptoms become too sever to ignore, and perhaps fatal, and to prevent you infecting others.  If you're not infected then you don't need to be tested.

I find it hard to believe only 50k people wanted to be tested so far, and anecdotal news stories suggest many people already feel sick and want to be tested but can't get them.

Can you add a few drops of bleach to up the ante? They may not mix, heck if I know. I always tend to put a few drops on bleach in the dishwater whether it needs it or not... just something I have always done since working for a vet as a youth.

It is important that those in "high risk" groups get "special" attention but for the vast majority of folks there really is no treatment that I am aware of, other than the normal rest, fluids, fever and isolate..

Better to just follow the recipe rather than mix alcohol and bleach.

Rubbing alcohol contains ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, which, when mixed with household bleach containing sodium hypochlorite, will create chloroform and hydrochloric acid, as well as chloroacetone or dichloroacetone. These compounds can cause damage to the nervous system, lungs, kidneys, liver, eyes, and skin.

The coronavirus’ grip on the market continues. Since the beginning of February, the S&P 500 has shed 8.5% of its value, a reflection of the effect the outbreak is having on the global economy. Amidst the bloodbath, one specific group of stocks is holding up. These are the drug companies those infected, the public at large and investors are hoping can halt the virus from spreading any further. Gilead Sciences (GILD) is among those leading the search for a treatment and is currently being rewarded by the market. In contrast to the broader market, GILD stock is up 23% year-to-date.

Remdesivir, one of the company’s existing drugs which was previously tested as a possible treatment for Ebola, is being tested as a potential treatment for COVID-19.

Gilead has initiated two Phase III studies in China, one in severe patients and one in patients with moderate symptoms. The trials will have short endpoints (14 days), with the possibility of data readouts in April.

Having more people tested does several things.

For one thing, knowing how many people are infected and where they are located and how fast it is spreading can help health officials and hospitals prepare for more admissions even if you, as someone who feels only mildly ill doesn’t require hospitalization.

It also gives them a better idea of how many cases there actually are as compared to seasonal flu or colds or other respiratory ailments or even allergies.

It would also indicate if those in your household or those you have been in close contact with may have been exposed and need to self-isolate.

If you are aware you are positive but not sick enough to be hospitalized, while the at home treatment is pretty much the same as for colds and influenza, knowing you are positive for COVID-19 may make you more aware of the complications and seek help earlier, plus if you need to go to the hospital, you can let them know you are positive so they can take extra steps to isolate you.

As this is a novel virus which may become endemic (seasonal) so being able to better understand its scope is very helpful.

“If you are having real issue, call 911…”

Should we reach high levels of infections with enough cases serious enough to require a call to 911, you have to hope they come in time and or that there aren’t too many 1st responders (or doctors and nurses) out sick with it too.

Gotcha, thanks, think I will just take a small bottle of bleach with me and do that instead of the alcohol thing.. so it dries my hands out, had worse. I just trust bleach so much more.

Besides, bleach is Hillary approved as we all know...

Update:

The Ohio Primary election scheduled for today has officially been postponed until June 2nd.

A judge blocked the Governor’s decision last night, the Ohio Department of Health then cancelled it due to health concerns, and I just read this morning that the (Republican) Ohio Supreme Court officially okayed moving the date.

There are many relieved poll workers and voters today.

I will happily vote absentee and stay at home today.  It will save us a few wipes.  :patriot:

Hundreds seek drive-up testing; one site closed

Fearing they may be infected with the coronavirus, hundreds have flocked in recent days to the Albuquerque hospitals offering drive-up COVID-19 testing, forcing one of the sites to shut temporarily because of dwindling resources and supplies.

Whitney Marquez, a spokeswoman for Lovelace Medical Center, said Monday that the hospital was temporarily putting its drive-up testing site on hold. The hospital was the first to start offering the service in Albuquerque on Friday evening. The site tested hundreds of people before its resources were taxed.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.   So the president misspoke.   Should have said anyone that "needs" a test (ie that is already showing symptoms) can get a test.

But I'm not sick and even if I get sick, I won't "need" a test.  I will self-quarantine anyway.

I don't think the intent of any of this is to stop the virus, but rather to slow its spread so the hospital system can keep up. Unfortunately, modern medicine being what it is, we don't have an abundance of hospital beds in this country (and most likely in western Europe as well.)

It is interesting that the western response to the crisis is to shut down the economy rather than do what's been done in the past - build temporary capacity to address acute illness. We all remember pictures from the Spanish flu epidemic of patients being housed in tent cities. Of course, back then it wasn't swiftly understood that large gatherings, like the infamous Philly war bond parade, were spreading the virus like wildfire.

I wonder whether a happy medium would have worked better. Like where we were a week ago, closing sporting events, parades, concerts and similar large gatherings, but not shutting down all "non-essential businesses" as Philadelphia has now done. The latter will grievously harm the economy, especially small businesses and the millions they employ, and will require economic triage of the budget-busting variety. I fear that we were in the sweet spot between caution and overreaction about a week ago, and now have crossed the line where the economic casualties may well eclipse the human ones.

Hopefully as COVID-19 victims recover we will begin to be able to roll out antibody serums in the next few weeks that can address acute infections and help get us to the place where we can doff the economic noose around our necks.

The election has been postponed by the Ohio Department of Health.

Official Election Day is now June 2nd.

This is a good thing.
Not for Biden.  He wants it to proceed so he can win one more and become the presumptive nominee without the bother of Bernie.

Lol... well.... I don't know about that.   I'm not all that social as it is.  No, really (lolol).

Don't like crowds & events (not since I was in my 20's) and only have a small circle of friends, family and neighbors that I associate with.   And coincidentally (not)... they are all "like minded".
