Doctor who sounded alarm on coronavirus dies

Li Wenliang, a doctor in China who was allegedly detained for warning others about the coronavirus before he himself was sickened by the illness, has died. His death was confirmed during a World Health Organization (WHO) press briefing on Thursday.

We're very sad to hear of the loss of Dr. Li Wenliang," WHO officials said.

Li had claimed that he shared his concerns via private chat with medical school graduates after several patients exhibited symptoms similar to SARS before he was detained by authorities. He later tested positive for the virus.

I don't know about you guys, but where I live, I'm getting conflicting information about the risk of getting the coronavirus.  On the one hand, local news is reporting the local health department is advising people to forget about the coronavirus and get their flu shots.  We've had several flu-related deaths here locally, although most of the victims were the elderly and/or people with existing illnesses. 

But then the national news frowny-faced anchors are carrying on about the coronavirus as if we are all going to die.  So who do I believe?

If it bleeds, it leads.  CoronaVirus can kill, is new, so it is going to be the news topic.

For me, one of the advantages of winter is that I stay home when the weather is nasty.  So I'm less likely to be exposed to the flu or the coronavirus than most people who work, go to school or are otherwise out in public. 

I do have one question -- don't know if it's already been asked -- I got the flu vaccine in September -- will it protect me from the coronavirus?

Not at all.  It does not even protect against every type of flu virus.  Each year they tailor it to match the more common types that year.

The flu shots already given are not for this virus.  A vaccine has not yet been developed.

Thanks fellas.  I do know the flu shot doesn't even protect against the flu entirely, let alone the coronavirus, but I thought maybe having had the vaccine might lessen the coronavirus effects as the flu vaccine sometimes does for strains other than the ones the vaccine is designed for.  Learned something today, so the day wasn't a total waste.  LOL

Surfing TBR is never a total waste, but it just seems that way, some days.  LOL!

Chinese runners do "home marathons" during coronavirus epidemic

CHANGCHUN, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- A Hangzhou runner named Pan Shancu ran 6,450 circles around two beds in five hours at home; a Xi'an runner, Cheng Dadu, continuously ran 100km in the living room; a mother Tan Xue, finished a half marathon at home and posted on social media her race bib, drawn by her son.

Although many people in China can not go outside due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, "home marathons" have become a new option for many Chinese runners during this time.

With less than 6 months before Japan hosts the opening ceremony for the 2020 Olympic Games, the coronavirus that has erupted in China has cast an early pall over the 17-day event. Julian Ryall reports from Tokyo.

The latest figures available indicate that over 600 people have died in China to date, making the virus more lethal than the SARS epidemic of 2002-03, which killed a total of 349 people in China. Authorities say that more than 30,000 people are known to have been infected, with some experts warning that the exact figure could be much higher.

Twenty-two people in Japan are being treated for the illness, some of whom are Chinese tourists who were taken ill after arriving in the country, and with little sign that health experts are bringing the outbreak under control, there have already been rumors that the Japanese government is considering cancelling the Olympics.

Li Wenliang: Coronavirus death of Wuhan doctor sparks anger

The death of a Chinese doctor who tried to warn about the coronavirus outbreak has sparked widespread public anger and grief in China.

Last December he sent a message to fellow medics warning of a virus he thought looked like Sars - another deadly coronavirus.

But he was told by police to "stop making false comments" and was investigated for "spreading rumours".

A whistleblowing Wuhan doctor hauled in by China's state security police after he and colleagues tried to warn the authorities about the coronavirus has died of the disease, sparking an outcry on the country's usually tightly regulated social media platforms.

Li Wenliang, 34, was one of eight medical professionals in the central Chinese city of Wuhan who tried to warn colleagues and others about a newly discovered virus similar to SARS amid silence from health officials.

After he reported that seven patients had contracted the virus, he was visited on Jan. 3 by police, who forced him to sign a statement admitting to having spread "rumors."

The Seoul Metropolitan Government conducted a rare inspection of restaurants in the city’s three major traditional markets, Wednesday, for the possible illegal consumption of bat meat, as part of its efforts to prevent the spread of a coronavirus, according to city officials.

On Wednesday, three additional cases of infection were confirmed here, putting the total number at 19.

The inspection team consisting of city officials overseeing hygiene matters, police and consumer rights activists looked into restaurants in Daerim Central Market in Yeungdeungpo, Gyeongdong Market in Dongdaemun and Joyang Market in Gwangjin; areas that are frequented by Chinese immigrants and tourists.

First American dies of coronavirus in China: US Embassy

A 60-year-old diagnosed with coronavirus in Wuhan, China, has reportedly become the first U.S. citizen to die of the novel virus.

The patient died at Jinyintian Hospital in Wuhan on Thursday, The New York Times reported.

The U.S. Embassy in Beijing confirmed the patient’s death Friday night but gave few other details.

The fast-spreading virus has killed more than 700 and infected more than 34,500 in China as of Friday.

A Japanese man in his 60s who was suspected of contracting the coronavirus also died in Wuhan, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said Saturday. It didn’t say when he died.

The Sun.co.uk ran a story on the Pangolin earlier and I thought, must be sensational but now I do see another story. These stories assert the Pangolin would have been an intermediary with bat  meat.  These pangolins, the scales are trafficked illegally into China. They see some value to them. Stories have been posted here on this smuggling.

The pangolin is considered the most trafficked animal on the planet and over one million have been snatched from Asian and African forests in the past decade, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

BEIJING, China  — The endangered pangolin may be the link that facilitated the spread of the novel coronavirus across China, Chinese scientists said Friday.

At least 31,000 people have been infected and 630 killed by the virus, which has spread to two dozen countries.

Researchers at the South China Agricultural University have identified the scaly mammal as a "potential intermediate host," the university said in a statement, without providing further details.

Fifteen Repatriated North Korean Refugees Kept Quarantined for Coronavirus in ‘Dangerous’ Tuberculosis Hospital

As the coronavirus epidemic rages on in China, authorities in North Korea have quarantined a group of 15 refugees that were captured in China and repatriated with the help of Chinese police, placing them in a facility meant to isolate patients with open cases of tuberculosis, RFA has learned.

Sources say that the government has little regard for the health of the refugees, and does not care if they contract tuberculosis while under quarantine for the novel coronavirus (nCoV).

“Yesterday an acquaintance of mine who works in the medical industry told me that some North Korean refugees who were sent back from China last month were put in isolation at a tuberculosis hospital,” a resident of North Hamgyong province told RFA’s Korean Service Thursday.

The families of Uighur Muslims held in internment camps are worried that China will pin their deaths on the fast-spreading coronavirus, which has killed over 560 people and infected tens of thousands, a UK publication revealed in interviews with family members.

Uighur activist Bahram K. Sintash told Metro that the fate of his father, journalist Qurban Mamut, who was taken to one of camps in 2018 remains unknown, and that he fears authorities will use the coronavirus spread to cover up his death.

Sintash, who lives in the US, has been unable to speak with his father for two years, after the Chinese government cut off all communication from the camps.

One thing about this I've read is that bats don't succumb to disease because they only give enough immune response to fight it off, whereas humans are drama queens that go full bore till it kills them.
