Philippines reports world’s 1st virus death outside China


BEIJING (AP) — The first death outside China from the new coronavirus was recorded Sunday in the Philippines, as countries around the world evacuated hundreds of their citizens from the infection zone and Chinese authorities completed a new, rapidly constructed 1,000-bed hospital for victims of the outbreak.

Chinese authorities also delayed the reopening of schools in the hardest-hit province and tightened the quarantine in one city by allowing only one family member to venture out to buy supplies.

The Philippine Health Department said a 44-year-old Chinese man from Wuhan, the city at the center of the crisis, was hospitalized Jan. 25 with a fever, cough and sore throat and died after developing severe pneumonia. The man’s 38-year-old female companion, also from Wuhan, tested positive for the virus as well and remained hospitalized in isolation in Manila.

A 44-year-old man in the Philippines died of the virus on Saturday, making him the first reported death outside of China. All territories and provinces in China have now been impacted by the virus.

5:00 pm: Santa Clara County reports ninth US case of coronavirus

The ninth U.S. case of coronavirus was confirmed in Santa Clara County on Sunday. It’s the second case in the San Francisco Bay area. The case is in a woman who was recently in Wuhan, China, and visited the U.S. to see family on Jan 23, according to the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department

Pyongyang sends Beijing financial aid for outbreak

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has expressed support to Chinese President Xi Jinping over China’s efforts to stop the spread of a new strain of coronavirus that has killed 259 Chinese people and sickened more than 11,000.

On Saturday, the North’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said that Kim “conveyed his sincere feelings of wanting to share the suffering and trial of the fraternal Chinese people and to render help even a bit,” in a letter to Xi. Kim also sent “militant greetings” to the Chinese president and expressed the conviction that China would emerge victorious in its campaign to combat the deadly virus.

The virus - which was first reported in Wuhan on Dec. 31 - has spread to around 20 countries, including South Korea, the United States, Japan and Canada, prompting the World Health Organization to declare the coronavirus outbreak a global emergency.

Coronavirus: Window of opportunity to act, World Health Organization says

The World Health Organization (WHO) says there is a "window of opportunity" to stop the deadly new coronavirus becoming a broader global crisis.

Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the steps taken by China to fight the virus at its epicentre were the best way of stopping its spread.

Meanwhile, China's envoy to the UN in Geneva told nations not to over-react.
