@Gefn

Jerusalem Post – today, Thursday:
University of Hong Kong scientists report that they have been able to create a vaccine for the Wuhan coronavirus, Daily Sabah reported on Thursday.

The university’s disease expert Yuen Kwok-yung claimed in an interview with the South China Morning Post that while the vaccine has been produced, “it will take a long time to test on animals.”

He said that it would take roughly a year until clinical trials could begin on humans.
The university's laboratory is one of 12 labs working in China attempting to find a vaccine. Vaccination by nature is preventative, so could not be used to save those already infected.

The US is also working to create a vaccine and has urged Chinese authorities to increase their cooperation with international health authorities.

US secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar is leading the White House task force charged with monitoring the virus, The Hill reported. Participating in the task force are, among others, national security adviser Robert O'Brien, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Robert Redfield, top National Institutes of Health official Anthony Fauci.  China granted American officials and World Health Organization officials permission to travel to China to study the virus.

WHO Declares Global Health Emergency for Novel Coronavirus

The World Health Organization has declared a global emergency over the deadly new strain of coronavirus that has sickened thousands of people in China and has now been spread via person-to-person contact in the U.S. for the first time.

"The main reason for this declaration is not because of what is happening in China, but because of what is happening in other countries," WHO executive director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said after the agency met on Thursday. "Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems, and which are ill-prepared to deal with it."

WHO officials had earlier said they were concerned with an increase in human-to-human transmission.

https://weather.com/health/cold-flu/news/2020-01-30-world-health-organization-declares-coronavirus-global-crisis

I think there were some slackers on their committee who must not have been informed in the prior vote.

This can hurt the world economy but picture the Chinese economy, they make so many goods that many, even in the US use, bicycles and so on.

Coronavirus declared global health emergency by WHO

The new coronavirus has been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization, as the outbreak continues to spread outside China.

"The main reason for this declaration is not what is happening in China but what is happening in other countries," said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The concern is that it could spread to countries with weaker health systems.

At least 213 people have died from the virus in China.

The WHO said there had been 98 cases in 18 other countries, but no deaths. Most cases have emerged in people who have travelled from the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the outbreak began. ........

........However, there have been eight cases of human-to-human infection - in Germany, Japan, Vietnam and the United States.

Speaking at a news conference in Geneva, Dr Tedros described the virus as an "unprecedented outbreak" that has been met with an "unprecedented response"................

...........Remember this is a disease which emerged only last month and yet there are already 7,736 confirmed cases in China and 12,167 suspected ones............

Where have you seen the mortality rate reported that high?  1~2% is all I have found.
That's all I have seen, too. Keep in mind that as the virus spreads, the ability to the medical care system to take care of cases diminishes. Providers get sick, supplies run out, beds are full. Consider hospital beds vs population, and it doesn't take a lot to overload the system, which is predicated on a set  number of patients at any given time vs 'rushes' from outbreaks.

The latter are short term events generally, and those empty beds would not pay the bills, so where the capacity and break even curves cross is a critical point.

I've seen numbers from 1-50% death rate. It's hard to calculate because the disease is so contagious and can have a long incubation time.

I've seen no numbers on the time between when symptoms first manifest and morality. Seem like around a week.

Plus we're dealing with the Chicom govt and who knows if anything they say is accurate.

Few days ago, it appeared the numbers were running about 4% mortality.  But believing in data from China would be a mistake.  Look at their actions.  They have quarantined a city with 11 million.  Who does that with a mortality rate of 4%?

Look at how this is spreading.  I see it as a real threat to humanity since most of the world does not have health departments geared to prevent this.  Today it is 20 countries.  In one month, it will be 100 countries.  Today 8,000+ are infected, one month from now, based on a spread rate we have seen, we could see 63 million infected by my calculation.  Perhaps efforts to safeguard the population will slow the spread or halt it, but I do not see that happening.  As long as we have people flying all over the world, and as long as this virus can incubate for two weeks without being symptomatic, the threat is real.

A mortality rate of 4% on 63 million would produce 2.5 million dead.  I would say health officials across the world are sleeping on the job.  While this is not as bad as the virus outbreak back in 1917 where 10 million people died, this is still a huge number of dead from one virus in a short period of time.  Again, that is doing a projection of one month.  If the outbreak is not abated by then, the number just keeps going up.  Take 7.5 billion population, subtract 25% that might have some form of resistance, and you have about 22 million mortalities at 4%, 5.6 million at 1%.

My wife works for the CDC, and with only six infected here so far, they are asking for volunteers to be deployed to work on the outbreak.

I gamed some numbers, too. The potential infection numbers are staggering if each infected person only, on average, passes the disease to two others.
While 1%  may not seem like much, there are more people in the world to be infected than, say, 1918, they travel far more and farther, and despite health care advances, facilities could be overwhelmed, at least on a local basis, greatly negating those advances for all practical purposes.
It bears watching.

Two coronavirus cases confirmed in UK

Two people from the same family have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK, the chief medical officer for England has announced.

It is understood the patients were staying in a hotel in Yorkshire, before being taken overnight to a specialist centre in Newcastle.

At least 213 people in China have died from the virus, with almost 10,000 cases nationally.
There have been 98 cases in another 18 countries.

Bad, bad decision to me, one of the medical associations say they need to do this.

Sometimes, you see Senators working different topics, either they specialize in it OR, they are assigned to do this.

So, Senator Cotton appears to be working this a whole, whole lot.

As a defensive measure, we must shut down commercial air travel between the United States and China.

As an offensive measure, we need a Manhattan Project level effort to work with our best research scientists and laboratories to develop a vaccine as quickly as possible.

(That's interesting, "Manhattan Project level")

We still don’t know where coronavirus originated. Could have been a market, a farm, a food processing company.

I would note that Wuhan has China’s only biosafety level-four super laboratory that works with the world’s most deadly pathogens to include, yes, coronavirus.

China claimed—for almost two months—that coronavirus had originated in a Wuhan seafood market. That is not the case. @TheLancet
published a study demonstrating that of the original 40 cases, 14 of them had no contact with the seafood market, including Patient Zero.

China is still lying about the spread of coronavirus, as they have from the start.

We now know the first case manifested no later than December 1. A month later, they continued to hide it from their own citizens.

Today, it is in every single province in China.

And still more and relative to others, Senator Tom Cotton's twitter is moderately active but it was very active yesterday.

There must be some of this on CSPAN too.

World govts are between a rock and a hard place. Commerce now is so global and mobile that you have to choose between the misery of the economy grinding to a halt from quarantine, or of the population succumbing to a virus.

That's where things are at now.

I don't think there should be any question that this is going to affect the world economy; including the U.S and perhaps people should start preparing for the possibility of a pandemic.

Xining, the capital of China's Qinghai Province, is 3 provinces west of Wuhan. It has 8 confirmed cases of nCV and all residents have been ordered not to go outdoors. Sort of a shelter-in-place for 2+ million city residents. Our daughter, who lives there, has been with us here for about 3 weeks, so she is not affected. But depending on how things progress, her return trip 3 weeks from now may be delayed.
If, as anti-Covid-vaxxers claim, https://www.poynter.org/fact-checking/2021/robert-f-kennedy-jr-said-the-covid-19-vaccine-is-the-deadliest-vaccine-ever-made-thats-not-true/ , https://gospelnewsnetwork.org/2021/11/23/covid-shots-are-the-deadliest-vaccines-in-medical-history/ , The Vaccine is deadly, where in the US have Pfizer and Moderna hidden the millions of bodies of those who died of "vaccine injury"? Is reality a Big Pharma Shill?

Millions now living should have died. Anti-Covid-Vaxxer ghouls hardest hit.

My opinion of Face Masks due to my training as an EMT:

1.  Do not buy a loose fitting cloth/material mask designed to stop dust.  It will not stop a virus getting to you.  No soft material, loose fitting mask, keeps out viruses.

2.  Do not buy an N95 soft surgical mask.  These are designed for surgeons to wear to mainly protect the patient, so the surgeon does not transfer to the patient what the surgeon exhales when he breathes.  If surgeon was ill, he would not be operating - the surgeon face mask is a precaution for both surgeon and patient.  Both nurses and doctors use these masks.  If working where there was a disease virus suspected, the medical personnel dealing with that person would likely wear a face shield.  We know nurses have caught this virus, it is gong human to human; those nurses should have been wearing face shields and gloves and disposing of them correctly as well as wearing proper medical clothing designed to keep the wearer safe and disposing of them correctly.

3.  A non-soft, hard medical N95 mask that fits closely to the skin (bends to do that), is better, but there is more: the virus can invade your eyes.  You must protect the entire face to stop a virus.  A full length face shield is needed.  Go here to see Face Shields - don't have to buy it here but look at what you need:

https://www.medline.com/product/Full-Length-Face-Shields/Face-Shields/Z05-PF07322

4.  If you need to wear a face shield, say someone with the virus has been around where you live, you must add these needs to the face shield in order to not contract the virus:

    A. Medical gloves.  Wear them when wearing face shield or without face shield.  Do not touch your face when wearing these gloves.  When you discard the gloves, do this:  With one gloved hand, take the inside top of the glove on the other hand and pull down to remove glove; the glove is now inside out.  Drop glove inside a container of some kind that can be closed.  With now bare hand, reach inside the other glove so you don't touch the outside of the glove, and pull it off; it is now also inside out, drop glove inside container and close container. Wash hands thoroughly.

    B. What the government says about face masks:

https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/personal-protective-equipment-infection-control/masks-and-n95-respirators#s1

Afraid of the coronavirus, American Airlines pilots sue to halt flights to China
By David Koenig
Associated Press |
Jan 31, 2020 | 8:33 AM

DALLAS - The pilots union at American Airlines sued Thursday to stop the carrier from flying to China and told members not to operate flights there because of the spreading coronavirus outbreak.

The Allied Pilots Association, which represents American’s 15,000 pilots, asked a state district court in Dallas for an injunction to halt the flights immediately. The union cited declarations by international health experts that the virus is a public health emergency.  ... More from Chicago Tribune

These are sad, I saw one video clip where the guy fell over while standing. In some of these cases, the person may still be alive and EMS tries to get to them. I'm saying that as a note of optimism. I don't know if we can be sure they are dead though it's terrible.
