This old bag remembers when downtown Pittsburgh had 5 department stores -- even a Saks Fifth Avenue for more upscale tastes. One by one, they have all disappeared. There are a few Macy's locations in the suburbs, but they are barely hanging on. Yes, online sales are killing them, but I think more than anything it's the ghetto types who made downtown and the malls unsafe. People just don't want the hassle of driving to a store, finding a place to park (and in downtown Pittsburgh having to pay to park), running the risk of having your car broken into or stolen, maybe getting assaulted or shot, etc. etc. Much better to stay home and shop online.
Other things are going digital too. The local newspaper, for example, is gradually phasing out print editions in favor of subscriptions to online editions. That's fine for me -- I have a laptop and a smartphone. But then there is my elderly aunt who has neither. I know she will miss the print edition of the paper when it's gone for good.
