Democrats 'utterly unpersuaded' by evidence behind Soleimani strike
By Rebecca Kheel and Jordain Carney - 01/08/20 06:12 PM EST

Democrats said Wednesday that the Trump administration failed to present evidence supporting the claim that a top Iranian general killed in a U.S. drone strike was planning an imminent attack.

The frustration boiled over after back-to-back closed-door briefings on the strike that killed Iranian Quds Force leader Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) said the evidence represented a “far cry” from an imminent attack, while Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) called the briefing “sophomoric.”

“I was utterly unpersuaded about any evidence about the imminence of a threat that was new or compelling,” Connolly said.

Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said the administration did not provide clarity on a potential attack and questioned why they were withholding information from Congress.

New Quinnipiac Iowa Poll: Qasem Soleimani now in a five-way tie with Biden, Sanders, Warren and Buttigieg.

Just kidding...

It's a four-way tie.

They should be careful. Soleimani might get a big chunk of the dead vote.

How long has he been in office?
Maybe it isn't just 'stupid'.
Surely you don't think all of those pallets of cash went to Iran?

Imminent threat?  Not sure why that's necessarily relevant.  Soleimani has been a constant, deadly threat to us and our allies, for decades, and remained so up to and including the attack on the U.S. embassy.

We discovered a window of opportunity to take out this trash, and we did so.

The question isn't of an imminent threat, but that of an imminent opportunity.

Exactly, finally someone made an appropriate response. While that may be more a matter of opportunity, I seriously suspect this was not the first time such an opportunity had presented itself.

Was Bin Laden an "imminent threat" when Obama assassinated him?

Perhaps to his concubines.

But you raise a good point.  Bin Laden in his hole probably wasn't actively plotting new terror attacks as General Salami likely was when he arrived at the Bagdhad airport to meet with the Shi'ite militia leader.   But the fact remains that both were taken out because of the blood on their hands following an opportunity to strike them without collateral damage.

Both Obama and Trump deserve credit for taking advantage of imminent opportunities to take out ongoing threats.   Bin Laden, for what it's worth, was taken out by an attack staged in a foreign nation (Pakistan) with which we were not at war and to which we did not provide advance warning of the violation of their territorial sovereignty.   So Obama "risked war" as well.

Party lines may stop at the water's edge ... but only for Republicans.  It has been this way for a long time.

Nope.  O'Bastard gets zero credit for being tricked into allowing bin Laden's execution.  It happened despite O'Bastard, not because of him.

A query???
Imagine for a moment the current posse of DC Democrats controlling Congress on Dec 7, 1941.
Anyone care to venture a guess as to how long it would have taken us to respond to Japan???

Naaaah, history's safe.  Old Rubberlegs was a Socialist puke.  The 21st Century Rats would have backed him to the hilt, just like the Rats in '41.
