Krefeld zoo fire: German police suspect three women

German police suspect a mother and her two adult daughters of having caused a deadly zoo fire by releasing illegal sky lanterns on New Year's Eve.

The blaze killed more than 30 animals, including rare apes and monkeys, in the western city of Krefeld.

Police say they have questioned the three women, local residents who are said to be "extremely sorry".

Depressing news story, I didn't post the first articles on this coming out. As said above, apes and monkeys are among the animals that died.

 More coverage at bild.de

It's so sad and, these gorillas and other primates and animals have also had a hard time in their home countries like DR Congo.

We have one of those big gorillas in a nearby zoo, he actually has a lot of land there, huge, he was grabbing big handfuls of grass and eating it.

They must come inside for the winter.

This is terribly sad...and unnecessary.

So sad.

Last summer where I live, there was a “lantern festival” at the fairgrounds which is inside the city limits.  No fires were started but only because the fire department was on standby along with residents who put any of them out rather quickly.

But while the event organizers claimed the lanterns would completely burn up and disintegrate in 3-4 minutes many landed in yards, on rooftops, on cars, on roads and it left quite a mess.  As I understand the lantern festival will not be allowed back next year not only because of the mess but also the fire concerns.
