Deadly M6.8 Earthquake strikes 6km S of Magsaysay, Philippines

A powerful earthquake registered by the USGS as M6.8 struck the Philippines at 06:11 UTC on Dec 15. The agency is reporting a depth of 22.4 km (14 miles).

The epicenter was located just 6 km (3.7 miles) S of Magsaysay (population 34,605), the Philippines.

The quake, along with its strong aftershocks (totaling 10 thus far), have been felt across the region.

The USGS has issued alerts for both economic losses and shaking related fatalities.

Reports of casualties are already coming in.

At least one death has been confirmed, a six-year-old girl died after a wall collapsed on her, according to Vincent Fernandez, the mayor of Matanao — a town in the southern Philippines.
