It is unfortunate that "backlash" occurs - we should all be able to relate to each other as individuals, not as members of identity groups. But as with prejudice generally, it is the result of human nature reacting to perceived facts. And it is a demonstrable fact that, nowadays, when someone goes on a rampage and kills people in the name of their religion, it is typically Muslims who do so.
Muslims would be well-advised to do a better job of making clear to one and all that such violent behavior is unacceptable. Are they obliged to do so? Of course not. But that is where "backlash" comes from.
