Attempts to build a multicultural society in Germany have "utterly failed", Chancellor Angela Merkel says.

She said the so-called "multikulti" concept - where people would "live side-by-side" happily - did not work, and immigrants needed to do more to integrate - including learning German.

The comments come amid rising anti-immigration feeling in Germany.   A recent survey suggested more than 30% of people believed the country was "overrun by foreigners".

The study - by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation think-tank - also showed that roughly the same number thought that some 16 million of Germany's immigrants or people with foreign origins had come to the country for its social benefits,

Mrs Merkel told a gathering of younger members of her conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party on Saturday that at "the beginning of the 60s our country called the foreign workers to come to Germany and now they live in our country."

She added: "We kidded ourselves a while, we said: 'They won't stay, sometime they will be gone', but this isn't reality."

The foreign workers were invited in the 60s when the German economy was booming, and they needed workers (*needed in view of dead from two wars)

These workers mainly came from the south of Europe; Greece, Portugal, Turkey, etc.

I lived in Germany, served in the US Army there, and later wrote a graduate paper about these facts (comparing the economies of post WWI of East and West Germany).

Their booming economy was called an "economic miracle," and the workers were called "guest workers."

Who would have imagined, that decades later Germans would not replace their own numbers, but that muslim newcomers would reproduce like rabits?

And who would have guessed those exploding numbers of muslims, would turn to an ever more rdical version of islam?

To varying degrees, this scenario  applies across much of Europe.

I believe that "natural" diversity is probbly fine.

In Switzerland I am not aware of conflicts between German, French and Italian speakers. I could be wrong.

Beyond that example,, there are many examples of conflicts, that last for generations to varying degrees.

To date the US exemplifies "diversity" that occurs over shared interests.

I believe that had been the hope in Germany, and Merkel now says it did not work.

I cannot imagine what it will take to make Leftists understand, Muslims do not assimilate into society. They do not adapt to a new environment. Instead everywhere Muslims go, their goal is to assimilate the society there to be Islamic. Not the other way around.

Seems then this is a simple timing issue.  The longer the time, the more assimilation occurs.

So that means diversity works but just takes time/  So in your mind, Merkel is wrong as she has not had enough time for diversity to work.

To re-unite West w/East, he needed to invite Turkish labor to help re-build
the infrastructure of the latter, which the Soviets had allowed to deteriorate.
The Turks came w/the understanding that they were guests, not citizens,
they had to make an effort to assimilate and they should learn German.
If they were successful, they were permitted to formally apply for citizenship
at the end of their contract, as many successfully did.
An anecdote; several members of the German National Team that won two
of the latest World Cups, were the the sons of those laborers.
However successor Chancellors imposed no such conditions and terms on the
Muslims who immigrated and the results were as predictable as 2+2=4!!!!!
And Murkey is surprised?????

Instead assess the name Wilhelm Von Leibniz, creator/developer if the Integral Calculus which
