13-Year-Old Girl Charged for Making Threat Using Finger Pointed Like a Gun

Police arrested the student on September 18th after investigators say she made the threat at Westridge Middle School with her finger.

Shawnee Mission School District spokesperson David Smith said there was no actual weapon found - it was a finger pointed like a gun.

Overland Park Police say the girl's actions were confirmed by two other students. A school resource officer with the department made the arrest.

"If someone makes a direct threat to another person to do harm to another person, that is considered criminal threat and that would be a felony," Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe told WDAF.

Although Howe couldn't speak to specifics in this case, he told WDAF what his office takes into account in these kinds of situations.

"Trust that there are a lot of people who do this all the time, making informed decisions based on all the facts," Howe said.

How I long for the good ole days when those who didn't have enough money to buy a cowboy cap gun could use the finger as a gun and say "pow pow". 

Of course, there may be more to this story than is indicated, but I have seen girls do this in jest.

What has happened to the innocence of childhood? During a class discussion, a thirteen-year-old girl attending Westridge Middle School in Overland Park, Kansas was arrested for pointing her finger like a gun at four of her fellow classmates and then at herself after another student asked her about killing other students in the class.

The child was sent to Principal Jeremy McDonnell’s office because of the gesture and the four other students involved were questioned. The school resource officer recommended that the police be called and that she should be arrested. The police then detained the girl and she was later released to her mother.

The disturbing gesture has gotten the girl charged with a felony.
