SpaceX executives hope a tweak to the company’s satellite constellation program will enable the company to roll out high-speed internet service in the U.S. earlier than previously expected.
The Hawthorne, California-based company, founded by billionaire Elon Musk, asked the federal government for approval in August to space out the satellites in its planned Starlink system, according to a filing with the Federal Communications Commission. This development was first reported by Florida Today.
The Starlink program consists of SpaceX sending nearly 12,000 satellites into orbit to provide cheaper, faster internet service worldwide. SpaceX launched the first 60 of its satellites from Cape Canaveral in May. According to the filing, SpaceX has determined it can increase the spacing between its satellites and provide internet service to a wider area faster.
