Primarying Trump is a Futile, Self-Defeating Exercise, So Naturally Some On the Right Support It

Posted at 11:07 pm on September 9, 2019 by Bonchie

I’m going to do dissent from some people that I generally don’t disagree with on most issues, but I feel I’ve got to.

With Mark Sanford jumping into the primary race against Trump, we’ve gotten a new shot of energy among some on the right. The idea is that he’s a credible candidate who can push Trump on the issues has been floating around on social media.

I have a couple of problems with this.

One, there is no path to beating Trump in the primary that doesn’t lead to the Democrat winning in 2020. Right now, Elizabeth Warren is setting herself up to win some of the early states and possibly be in position to rocket ahead after New Hampshire. It is extremely possible she could be the nominee. A socialist, pro-abort, wealth tax supporting liberal that wants government to control nearly every aspect of your life. The point is that the stakes are not low here.

Far fetched, yes, but surprisingly not mentioned in the article is what would happen if Trump gets caught with a 'live boy or dead girl scenario' (can't say it's not plausible) and a credible Conservative emerges from the wreckage, Would Trump run as an Independent guaranteeing a dem victory?   I vote his EGO and his supporters would demand nothing LESS!

You never know until you try. I would sure like to cast a vote this time around. And it can't hurt to have a fiscal conservative at the podium. After all, his sins don't matter anymore. Integrity is off the table these days.

Its plainly obvious there are Republicans of the Mitt Romney/Jeff Flake ilk that would be tickled pink to get back to business as usual by having a Biden or Warren take over the White House.

The good ol' boys & gals can get to scratching their 'esteemed colleagues' backs, pundits & RINOs back to angling for spots on Sunday TV shows & wringing their hands about those durn libruls.

Nobody's got better fiscal conservative bonafides than Sanford.  High 90's all around Conservative.
How exactly does that put him in the Romney/Flake category (which is more closely aligned with Tumpy)?

Mike Lee's conservative bona fides were impeccable as well. Now he's Google's stooge.

I don't believe it in the first place, and we are not talking about Mike Lee.

Here’s my other problem. Because the above is undoubtedly true, all this does is reinforce the idea that more traditional, establishment Republicans are still perfectly happy to lose gracefully rather than doing what it takes to win.
This pseudonymous character Bonchie, whoever the heck (s)he is, sure has a lot of gall to tell us we won't "do what it takes to win" all the while telling us there's no way we can possibly win.

Trump is a New York City liberal with some nationalist tendencies whose penchant for running his mouth far outweighs the benefits. He hasn't built the wall. He hasn't revived the Rust Belt; in fact, he has told the very people he promised to help to leave! Pretty much every benefit he can claim is solely the result of Barack Obama being term-limted. A turnip could get these kind of economic returns! He's done nothing on abortion. Nothing to beat back the alphabet soup lobby. Nominated a liberal Brett Kavanaugh to SCOTUS to squander any opportunity to undo previous courts' damages. Continued to escalate the national debt. Folks, we're getting nowhere. Gee, winning sure looks a whole lot like losing lite.

And we have the choice between that, or the socialist left.

How about putting forth a guy who will balance the budget, tell the alphabet soup lobby to go pound sand, put like-minded jurists onto the courts, and put in place policies that will actually help the long-suffering Rust Belt and other struggling areas come back as an economic contributor. Oh, no, we can't do that. We have to sit through five more years of Mr. "Grab'em by the bleep" and "If she weren't my daughter, I'd be dating her." Mr. "I'll use Twitter as my personal insult sounding board where I and my press team will deliberately butcher the English language for entertainment." Mr. Ego.

I can't believe there is anyone who thought Donald Trump was any different from the rest of the Washington swamp.

The point is apparently 'conservative' bona fides don't amount to warm spit. Mark Sanford's included.

Besides, if values are what compel you Mark Sanford can't be your guy.

And Joe Walsh was one of Congress's most conservative members during his time there. It's hilarious. But if you don't follow along with the New York City liberal, you're not good enough.

Remember 2008? Rudy McRomney? Yeah, McCain, Romney, and a New York City liberal who is now on Trump's legal team. Meanwhile, the actual conservatives were polling 1% in that race. McCain won, and we got clobbered. But I guess New York City liberalism is OK as long as you're famous and troll the media that he worked for for ten years!

Why? According to all y'all, we ain't electing a preacher.
So we might as well elect someone who will choke the sh*t outta the federal budget.

Choke it till it dies. And we sure ain't getting that now.

The budget has been getting choked for considerably longer than the past two years. Trump hasn't helped, but cmon.

Well... yeah.... since, if that happened (Rats win the WH)... the RINOs could just sit back and coast... no effort needed .... no more having to "work" at pretending to care about the nation.  IMO, they are even worse than the "admitted" Democrats.  At least the rats aren't denying which side they are on.

The budget has been nonexistent. Literally...

And that should be the FIRST order of business to any businessman, Republican, or especially, Conservative. And it is exactly in Sanford's wheelhouse.

That's right.   Given his credentials and history,  Sanford's a conservative most of us can be proud to support.    He's neither a Flake nor a gadfly.    Nor is he a centrist like Mitt.

It is time for conservatives - especially us old-school movement conservatives -  to decide whether we stand for we said all these years we believe in,  or whether we are going to let the Trumpsters intimidate us with fables of "self defeating exercises".

We need to try, or else admit we've sold our souls.

Naw. I am standing where I always have, and always will, until the day I die. I didn't sell my soul in the first place. I won't be voting for Tumpy, Sanford or not. I will vote for a Conservative, and sans Sanford, that probably means the Constitution Party candidate... Or possibly the Libertarian, depending on who that is.

REALLY. Sanford is caught in ONE indiscretion, and your guy has lived as a cretin his whole life. It doesn't even come close to comparison.

And btw, that indiscretion is the only reason why I said I don't know if I would vote for him yet. It shows a lack of integrity that gives me pause, just like it did wrt Tump.

So your accusation of hypocrisy does not have legs.
