Ukrainian Sailors Held By Russia Released, Say Relatives

Sailors of Ukrainian naval ships, which were seized by Russia in November 2018, attend a court hearing in Moscow earlier this month.

A relative of one of the Ukrainian sailors held by Russia has told RFE/RL's Crimea Desk that all 24 captives have been freed amid unconfirmed reports of a prisoner swap with Russia.

"We got that information and immediately left for Kyiv," one of the relatives said early on August 30 amid unconfirmed reports that the Ukrainian prisoners had already landed in the Ukrainian capital.

The comments come after Ukraine's prosecutor-general reposted comments from a Ukrainian parliament member saying Ukraine and Russia had carried out a swap of prisoners, including Ukrainian sailors captured by Russian forces last year and Ukrainian film director Oleh Sentsov.

So, hopefully, this sag is over, it lasted long enough.
