Could someone here help me and my pea brain out here?    A hurricane can just sit and spin and not make landfall?  Sounds rather unusual to me.  Seems every hurricane I've heard of made landfall somewhere.   :shrug:

They can and often do just sit and spin until some steering current comes along and gets it moving again.  Many never do make landfall on any continental landmass.

Thanks @Bigun   If this storm just parks, it could be more devastating than if it made landfall.

Actually, many, if not most, Hurricanes never make landfall.  While Dorian has been churning up from TS to Cat 5, Erin was in the Atlantic, but never made it to dry land before dying off Newfoundland.  Current maps I've seen for Dorian show there is an excellent chance the eye never makes it ashore, either.  That said, there will be craptons of rain pouring down from Florida to Virginia when he gets close.  Winds all along that area will be very high, too, along with the storm surge.

Still very dangerous, only it seems likely that danger is going to be spread through many Atlantic States.

Absolutely @Applewood.  That is basically what happened with Hurricane Harvey two years ago.   56" of rain at my place and I'm nearly 100 miles inland.

As Dorian makes landfall on the Bahamas with winds of 180-mph, it is now the strongest hurricane to hit the Bahamas region in modern records. Only four storms in the Atlantic have ever exceeded a wind speed of 180-mph. President Trump warns it could be among 'strongest' to hit in decades.

"Dorian has become the strongest hurricane in modern records for the northwestern Bahamas," the National Hurricane Center said on Sunday morning.

Hurricane Dorian has made landfall on Elbow Cay in the Bahamas' Abaco Islands, the National Hurricane Center says.

Dorian became the strongest hurricane in modern records for the northwestern Bahamas after strengthening to a "catastrophic" Category 5, the National Hurricane Center said Sunday.

Large waves and heavy winds pounded the northern Bahamas as on Sunday as Hurricane Dorian barreled toward the islands. As of 11 a.m., the storm was about 20 miles east-northeast of the Bahamas' Great Abaco Island, and around 205 miles east of West Palm Beach in Florida, according to the center.

The center said Dorian's maximum sustained winds had increased to 185 mph as of 1 p.m., up from 180 mph, with wind gusts over 220 mph.
