Poll: Trump Leads in 2020 Matchup Against Top Democrat Candidates

President Trump leads top Democrat candidates in a hypothetical general election matchup, according to a Zogby Analytics/24/7 Wall St. poll released Monday.

The poll, which surveyed 897 likely U.S. voters August 9– 12, shows Trump narrowly topping all of his leading Democrat challengers.

Respondents were asked, “If the 2020 presidential election were held today and the candidates were Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden, whom would you vote for?”

Of the 897 respondents, 46 percent chose Trump, 45 percent chose Biden, and nine percent said they were unsure. While Biden fares better with millennial voters– 50 percent to Trump’s 38 percent – Trump does better with voters 65 and older, 56 percent to 40 percent. Trump also leads Biden among independent voters, 44 percent to Biden’s 36 percent.

Couple of takeaways:   

-   This election is going to be a referendum on Trump.   The poll shows almost the same results no matter whether the Dem opponent is Sleepy Joe or an identity politics-obsessed socialist.

-   If Trump can somehow win,  the credit will go to black and Hispanic voters,  who apparently aren't unaware of where their recent prosperity has come from.

Besides that, most polls under-poll republicans. Zogby doesn’t. His methods controls for actual percentages of D’s and R’s. Giving a better confidence level.

If anything is clear by now it's that most polls mean nothing, especially this far out.

And especially polls involving Trump. The media has definitely crapped the nest and will never get reliable results where he is concerned.

But intuitively speaking its hard to imagine a scenario where he loses next year. Maybe some kind of economic cataclysm.

I agree about the worthlessness of the polls.  But I wouldn't be so sanguine about the re-election prospects.

I think that the 2020 battle is going to make 2016 look like a walk in the park.  Every arrow in their collective quiver is going to be shot at stopping him....  there is simply too much at stake.....   they are not going to go quietly into the night.....  look at the past few years.....

No doubt. But their constant yapping since 2016 has had the effect of a flu shot IMO - thanks to the hysterical blathering of the rats & media he's been inoculated and there's not a whole lot more they can throw at him.

Barring some actual catastrophe, or a really dumb move on his part like supporting a red flag law, he's gonna be re-elected.

The problem is, these are national polls. The national polls, right before the election, predicted Clinton by a 3% margin. They weren’t far off, since she finished with a 2.1% margin, in the popular vote. So, while it was fairly accurate, from that standpoint, electoral votes are what really mattered.

Yeah the alleged words of HL Mencken come to mind.

Regarding the former I'm hoping there're things going on behind the scenes to limit the usual damage the rats do with their beloved voter fraud. Every now and then a story'll pop up re: purging voter rolls, etc. Stuff I don't recall happening before.

Polls are polls and not very reliable and certainly way too early to tell.  Trump has another year to make good on promises.  Another year to see if his tax cuts and tariffs are beneficial.  Another year for the DEMS to self-destruct.
