Democratic presidential candidate Marianne Williamson, calling for a national "atonement" over the treatment of Native Americans, vowed Monday to rescind medals of honor for those who fought against them and even take down President Andrew Jackson's portrait from the Oval Office if she's elected.

The spiritual author, who has gained a devoted following in recent weeks for her memorable debate performances, called for a “new era of American history” with Native Americans during an appearance at the Frank LaMere Native American Presidential Forum.

"We can atone. We can make amends," Williamson said. "And if and when I'm president of the United States, we will. We will begin by taking that picture of Andrew Jackson off the wall of the Oval Office."

Jackson’s presidency was notoriously marked by the signing of the Indian Removal Act, which resulted in violent conflicts between Native Americans and the U.S. government amid the relocation of thousands of Native Americans.

Williamson called the portrait "one of the greatest insults."

She then took aim at another symbol from that historic period, vowing to withdraw military medals of honor for those who fought against Native Americans.

Williamson has been in the bottom tier of 2020 candidates in recent polling, but nevertheless has built a national profile in the wake of viral debate performances. The self-help author cautioned the other candidates at the last debate that “wonkiness” would not stop the "collectivized hatred" of the president and would lead to “very dark days” for Democrats.

At Monday's forum, Williamson stopped short of calling for financial reparations, which she supports for slavery. She called Native American history a "more complicated situation" than one that can be fixed with such a measure. She suggested the U.S. look to how Germany reconciled with Jews in the aftermath of the Holocaust as "a template of our national repair" that could be used to make amends with Native Americans.

The presidential hopeful stated that children must forever be educated about how the U.S. treated Native Americans and suggested a year-long reconciliation program between the two peoples.

“It is time for us to do some very important, deep, and powerful repair work,” she concluded.

The Indians were here - settlers came, established a government and army - the two groups fought, we had more army and guns, Indians lost.  We treated Indians badly, marched those in the east, "Trail of Tears", to  Oklahoma and those further west were put on desolated lands.
Now, Indians have those reservations - it is their land, for good or bad.

History is history - no one can change that.  When this older generation, who studied this history in school, is no longer here, the younger generation will likely never hear this history.   Does anyone know if Indian history is still in our history books?  Hmm, is US history even taught in schools now?

Shoulda gone with a healing black light...there's millions of posters available, too.

Is that a rhetorical question?

Aw hell, my son's 8th grade drama teacher couldn't even get her facts straight on the classic song Blue Suede Shoes. She said in class it was written by Elvis.

Wellll, my son and I had just returned from seeing a game between Gonzaga and Memphis in 2014, and our itinerary included a stop at Sun Studio. Lots of history in that place, definitely one of the birthplaces of rock and roll.

We learned there that Carl Perkins wrote Blue Suede Shoes, and his version (pre Elvis) was the first song to ever reach #1 on the rock, R&B, and country charts.

His teacher didn't believe him, and she ate humble pie after they went to Google to settle the argument.

My 3 kids and grandson know that when they go on vacation, or on a road trip, they're going to learn things they never knew before.

I also enjoy ribbing younger folks, such as on Juneteenth: I told a couple of younger coworkers that the Union forces cut the South's internet feed, so it took two months for the message to reach Texas that the slaves were freed.

Went zooming right over their heads.

It is a black day for Andrew Jackson.

No worries.  Before this is over, Andrew Jackson will become a Republican just like George Wallace and all the Dred Scott Justices.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."

I was going to say that but you beat me.  Yes...we all fought bitterly and to the death. But actually that is what happens when a county is taken over. They don't have to stay on a reservation any longer. If I remember correctly, Andrew Jackson adopted an Indian son.

Besides...they have the casinos now and are whoopin' up on most and laughing.

Sounds to me like Williamson is trying to take over Warren"s schtick.  She ain't gonna be happy.

Let's not also forget one crucial detail:

Indians were hit by plagues just a couple of decades before "white man" arrived here, at least on the northern reaches of the continent. While Europeans had their own plagues (ahem, Black Death), native Americans were particularly prone to getting sick and dying. The Pilgrims had landed on areas originally owned by the Patuxet, who'd been wiped out except for one single survivor (Squanto) who died not long after. And no, those diseases weren't spread by the white man as biological warfare. We didn't even understand germ theory yet. Most surviving accounts suggest it came from diseased fish.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

You know, that Obastard-inspired kerfuffle inspired me to start collecting currency.  The first thing I bought was a sheet of 16 uncut $20 bills.  I now have a sheet of each denomination from $1s to $100s.  (The sheet of Hundreds took me a couple months to save up for!)

Do they charge sales tax when you buy currency?

Yet?

The Indians didn't just spring up out of the North American soil, they came here from somewhere else just like the Europeans. Indians were not the wonderful wise stewards of the land history is whitewashed with. They roved in part because they used up what was around them, they also killed Buffalo en mass by running them over cliffs when they could, they killed other tribes and enslaved them over territory. Were whites really the first slave owners? I think not. :pondering:

You usually find this sort of historical revision only in dictatorships and communist countries, interesting how it seems it's always democrats that want to revise history in America.

No sales tax, but they charge a premium for uncut sheets.  I paid the Bureau of Engraving and Printing $1,800 for that sheet of 16 notes.
