Vets say Afghanistan War wasn't worth it, but enlisted leaders find troops want deployments there

A Pew poll found a majority of veterans believe the war in Afghanistan wasn't worth fighting, but U.S. troops want to keep deploying to the country, enlisted leaders say.

Of veterans surveyed, 58% said the war was not worth fighting, while 38% said it was. Despite those numbers, Army Sgt. Maj. Timothy Metheny, the top U.S. enlisted soldier in Afghanistan, said troops are eager to take on risky deployments.

"They're disappointed when you have to tell them about the force caps" in Afghanistan, Metheny said during a Pentagon briefing last week. The United States has approximately 14,000 troops in the country, down from a peak of 100,000 in late 2010. Metheny said retention goals for those serving in Afghanistan are being met at 108%.
