Southaven police called to Walmart for report of active shooter

Authorities are responding to a report of an active shooter at a Mississippi Walmart.

Officers with the Southaven Police Department responded at 6:32 a.m. to the Goodman Road address for a report of an active shooter, a police department spokeswoman said.

Multiple injuries have been reported and people are being asked to avoid the area.

No other details were immediately available as officers and emergency personnel were at the scene. ... More

...   The incident began at about 6:45 a.m. on Tuesday when officers were called for an active shooter at the Walmart location on Goodman Road. Multiple witnesses reported hearing a series of gunshots.

At least one person is believed to have been shot, but it was not immediately clear if there were any other injuries. A large number of emergency services were called to the scene while officers worked to secure the scene.

Two confirmed dead, shooter in hospital.

Two people were dead when authorities arrived at a Walmart in Southaven on Tuesday morning.

The shooting occurred between 6:30-6:40 a.m., according to DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco. When officers arrived, they found the two dead. The two are believed to be employees of the store.

The suspect was also an employee at the Walmart until Monday, the Sheriff said. That suspect was shot and taken to Regional One Medical Center with injuries.

One Southaven officer was shot and taken to DeSoto Baptist Hospital. He is expected to be OK, the sheriff said.

The sheriff said it is unclear how many others might be injured.

Southaven is pretty much a part of Memphis.  Used to be a middle-class area, nice homes and fairly low crime.

I said in another thread that all these incidents at Walmarts are going to kill off a number of these stores -- just like shopping malls.  Bad publicity makes prospective shoppers think twice about going to a store they think may not be safe.

  @Applewood  You've just described what happened at Century III mall. Bus service from Clairton led to mobs of unruly youths terrorizing the customers - also what you described of the potato pee incident at the Walmart adjacent to that mall.

Obviously, this was one of those "disgruntled employee" incidents in MS, not just random juvenile delinquent violence, but I agree. People may conclude this isn't a safe place to shop anymore.

    Two Walmart employees were killed and a police officer was injured in a shooting Tuesday at a Walmart store in Southaven, Mississippi, authorities said.

    The suspect was a suspended Walmart employee, a spokeswoman for the Southaven Police Department told Business Insider.

     Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite called the shooter a "disgruntled employee." Walmart did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the suspect's relationship with the company.

    "These people were doing the same thing that you and I do every day," said Southaven Police Chief Macon Moore. "They showed up for work so they could provide for their families and they became victims of a senseless violent act."

I doubt if he is an illegal if the ex-employee was there for 25 years... and I guess, that's the thing, fired after all this time with the company.   We will surely know more in the coming hours.
