Tucson’s Raytheon Missile Systems has won an $11.1 million Department of Defense contract modification for engineering services to support the Javelin missile system.

This contract is for an ongoing engineering development project for the new Javelin missile variant, the G-Model.

Javelin is considered the world’s most versatile one-man, portable, anti-tank guided munition and surveillance weapon system, said Brad Fribbs, the international, innovation and growth program manager for Raytheon’s Javelin project.

“Javelin has been around since the early '90s,” Fribbs said. “It’s always been a joint venture between Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. In the end, the soldier gets a better product.”

The missile, which weighs less than 50 pounds and is designed for soldiers to carry and fire from their shoulder, offers a greater than 94% reliability rate and can destroy an array of targets, such as tanks, bunkers or caves, according to the company.

The Javelin missile is considered a “fire and forget” missile, which helps to increase the survivability of an infantry squad, said Tommy Boccardi, domestic business development manager for Raytheon’s Javelin program.
